Is Alexis Ohanian setting a new standard for fatherhood by prioritizing presence over being a 'cool dad'?

Alexis Ohanian is on a mission to reshape the norms of parenthood! A father of two, Olympia and Adira, Serena Williams’ husband is blending his experience of business with fatherhood. However, Ohanian, who once said having children was the best decision of his life, has one aspect that he wants to improve on.

The Reddit co-founder might be a “cool” celebrity in his professional life, but his candid confession during his “Business Dad” podcast revealed a different story in his personal life. During a conversation with Bobby Kim, the co-founder of The Hundreds, about teaching their kids skateboarding, Ohanian spoke about why he doesn’t have to lose his sleep over being a cool dad. “This is the plight of the cool dad. It’s the one that I don’t have to worry about, because I know I am not cool.”

Kim protested the idea, saying, “All dads are so much cooler now.” Ohanian agreed with the generalized statement but ranked himself at the bottom of that list, saying, “It’s a low bar, though, compared to our generation’s parents.” The businessman of course lauds his own dad for his parenting. In fact, Alexis Ohanian Sr. and Jr.’s pancake Sunday tradition comes from Chris Ohanian, as the ‘Business Dad’ once revealed.

Cool or not, Alexis Ohanian, who took 16 weeks of paternity leave when his older daughter, Olympia, was born, is all in action when it comes to being there for his children. And it comes from his own lessons, “Any man can be a father, but not every father is a dad. I’m grateful that I had such a great role model in my dad, Chris Ohanian, who is the reason why I know what matters.”

Be it enjoying with them on vacations, taking them to Disney World, or asking for help on Facebook to style Olympia’s hair, Ohanian is indeed raising the bar of an ideal dad! “I love many elements of my “Executive Role” at home, for many of the same reasons I enjoy it professionally,” he once said. That “executive role” extended to Ohanian making pancakes at home for his daughter as well. Speaking about it, Alexis once said, “[Olympia] just thinks I make pancakes for a living.”

However, Ohanian has a different perspective in mind, and stated, “I really want Olympia to see me working, to see me building. And I also think it’s part of my responsibility as a dad and a role model.” Although Ohanian might not think he is a cool dad in general when it comes to DIY building sessions with his daughter, he knows how to have a fun day with Olympia!

Alexis Ohanian’s fun trips with his daughter

Olympia and Alexis Ohanian’s trips are never dull, be it their Disney World or Home Depot! Both know how to have fun while also learning new skills. This happened last year as well when Ohanian shared a few posts on X about his daughter’s DIY sessions while building a birdhouse.

“The ‘Home Depot trip with Papa’ is a rite of passage — unlike my dad, I’ve timed it to a fun Saturday kids’ building session they host. Jr doesn’t know how good she has it!” The posts revealed Olympia, deeply engrossed in building a wooden house for birds with a screwdriver in her hands. In the other post, she is just standing in the store, taking a look at her surroundings.

Not only this, but when it comes to taking his daughters on some adventurous trips to Disney World, Ohanian once wrote, “Can’t wait to take the girls on this.” Therefore, one thing is clear: Alexis Ohanian, who often shares such intimate glimpses of their day-outs, is determined to be the greatest dad of all time.
