We already know that Alexis Ohanian is a wise businessman. But believe it or not, he has made mistakes along the way. One of his biggest investing regrets was Clubhouse— the social audio app that got popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. It successfully raised over $100 million and there was a time it reached a $4 billion valuation. With over 10 million downloads, it looked like other social media platforms had tough competition. But the post-pandemic return to normal life was tough on Clubhouse as its usage dropped by 2021.
On the flip side, there is an investment that Ohanian is extremely proud of because it successfully secured the future of his kids. Hear it from the man himself!
In the August 7 episode of the podcast ‘The Twenty Minute VC (20VC)’ hosted by Harry Stebbings, Ohanian revealed, “So, the smartest thing I did was I asked our LPAC. I said, ‘Listen, I believe it’s going to help this deal a lot if I can invest 250k personally via a trust for my daughters, because the storytelling around, ‘Hey, look, Serena and Alexis’s daughter is the youngest owner in Pro Sports.” That’s going to be valuable for helping us tell the story.”

“So the good new is, I set that up. It is not just for Olympia, but all of our future kids. And they are now actually because of this latest round. They are literally multi-millionaires because of that one investment four years ago.”
Olympia became the youngest co-owner in professional sports history when her parents gifted her a share in the Los Angeles-based women’s soccer team Angel City FC, with her father Alexis Ohanian becoming the team’s lead investor in 2020. But what is the motivation behind Ohanian’s investments?
In the same podcast episode, he further shared, “I’m in the point of my life where I’m in the legacy-building mode, and the two people who I care the most about are these little kids.”

Last year, Olympia, 5 at that time, became a part-owner of the Los Angeles Golf Club. This team is part of the innovative TGL, a tech-infused golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. “Announcing my fellow co-owner of @wearelagc… @olympiaohanian! Olympia is the youngest owner in professional sports (@weareangelcity) and is now the youngest 2-team owner in professional sports. She’ll be joined by her future sibling,” Alexis Ohanian wrote on Instagram.
At the time, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian were expecting their second child, Adira, who is now a partial owner of the team.
But the now 7-year-old Olympia is too innocent to realize this. In a conversation with PEOPLE in 2023, Ohanian reflected on the same, saying, “Right now all Olympia knows is that Angel City FC is our team, and she loves cheering for them. I think as she gets older, maybe she’ll come to see the different layers to it.”
Subsequently, Ohanian also highlighted, “Obviously, being the youngest owner of pro sports is pretty fun, but she doesn’t actually understand that she is the youngest owner in pro sports.”
Alexis Ohanian: Serena Williams’ husband’s investment approach!
In July, Alexis Ohanian posted an old video of himself and Olympia during an Angel City FC game on his X page, sharing a touching experience. Olympia was beaming in the video when the stadium’s big screen introduced her as the “Youngest Owner of a Pro Soccer Club.” But Olympia felt shy and buried her face in her father’s neck as the audience applauded.
Ohanian reflected on the happy occasion and wrote, “I just stumbled on this old video, and it made me smile.”
It is clear that the father is willing to take steps that will secure his children’s future and also give them the push they need in order to find their niches in adulthood.

He is a venture capitalist who usually invests in tech start-ups. But he is also all about identifying potential. No doubt, the Reddit cofounder, who has backed over 40 unicorns, including tech giants like Coinbase, Instacart, and Hubspot, has been supporting women’s sports. That’s how he invested in Angel City FC, which has become NWSL’s most valuable team.
From there, she also shifted his attention to women’s track and field. His venture Athlos aims to revolutionize the sport. “We’re taking a first principles approach. This is one of the biggest things I’ve seen that’s held back women’s sports – trying to use existing infrastructure and best practices to tell these stories,” he stated.

It is a win-win situation. It provides new opportunities for athletes with higher prize money and also creates a Coachella-like experience for fans. For Ohanian, though, it is more than just this. He sees it as a powerful medium to tell compelling stories. He believes in creating a difference through his investments.
