The NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament has consistently seen an increase in viewership, with many ardent sports fans keeping tabs on it. Even the recent ‘March Madness’ matchups managed to keep the audience on the edges of their seats with some high-octane performances from female college athletes. After witnessing the growing popularity of women’s basketball, Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, recently issued a bold assertion.

In his latest Instagram story, the American internet entrepreneur shared a video clip of a flurry of sports fans gathered at the Spirit of 77, a popular sports bar and restaurant in Portland, Oregon, as they watched ‘March Madness’ WBB games. Ohanian also added the caption, “WBB owns March Madness,” as he suggested how the NCAA event is being carried by women’s basketball and not men’s.

The NCAA’s ‘March Madness’ matchups saw teams like the Texas Longhorns and Gonzaga Bulldogs put on a stellar display of their prowess. With such spectacular showdowns, the WBB has constantly been growing in terms of popularity and viewership, as it also impressed the Reddit co-founder. But this is not the first time that Ohanian has heaped praise on WBB while comparing it to the men’s side.

In the previous season, the ‘March Madness’ championship game between the LSU Tigers and Iowa Hawkeyes became the highest-scoring game in WBB tournament history while also breaking viewership records. Alexis Ohanian, who has rarely held himself back from showcasing his support for women’s sports, took to his social media to open up about how it was “a tipping point” for the WBB.

He tweeted, “The silver lining is that everyone is talking about @MarchMadnessWBB — even eclipsing the men at times — and attention is EVERYTHING in this business, so I believe this was a tipping point for the women’s game.” In his tweet, the internet mogul also asserted that WBB has managed to eclipse the men’s side not just in popularity but also in business. He further urged others to invest in women’s sports by tweeting, “Just the start. #InvestInWomensSports”
