This Reddit co-founder was a 2005 McIntire School of Commerce graduate at the University of Virginia. Yesterday, the Virginia Athletics Foundation announced that the Reddit co-founder donated a large sum to the Cavalier Women’s basketball program, the largest donation in this basketball program’s history. Explaining the fund’s purpose, the University of Virginia’s official news page wrote, “Its intention is to elevate recruiting and player retention efforts while addressing the financial and competitive demands of this new era of college athletics.” 

 The Director of Athletics of Virginia, Carla Williams praised Ohanian’s heartwarming gesture and said, “Alexis’ commitment to women’s sports is unparalleled, He sees the value and he is willing to invest. His support will help attract championship talent to the University of Virginia and specifically, to UVA women’s basketball. I am extremely grateful for his foresight and commitment to the future of women’s athletics at the University of Virginia.” Interestingly, Ohanian was also over the moon that he could do this for his alma mater.

“Alright, you’ve probably heard the news. Honestly, it has been a very good year for me with Reddit going public and there will be no Reddit without University of Virginia so made sense my first big investment in women’s basketball would be my Alma mater, the University of Virginia, so I am so proud, it’s gonna be a major donor, its for the women’s basketball. We’re gonna make sure that we’re in the top top program of the country,” said Ohanian. His words echoed his gratitude to his college for helping him shape his future as a successful entrepreneur. So, he decided that his biggest investment should be made for his college.

Despite the big announcement, the news didn’t disclose the exact amount of the donation. However, the University of Virginia’s social media page offered tribute to the Reddit co-founder expressing their love and gratitude for such generous help.
