Grand slams are the type of events where some of the most unexpected moments take place. High-ranking players are upset with surprising losses, controversial moments happen, and records are broken, setting a new bar. Recently, we saw a teenage Australian Open player win the main draw, adding her name as one of the youngest players to win the main draw in the Grand Slam.

To celebrate her performance, Serena Williamsformer coach, who guides her in his academy, had words of praise for her.

16-year-old Czechian player Brenda Fruhvirtova reached the main draw of the Aussie slam after dropping only one set. She faced former number 39 Ana Bogdan in the first round and won the bout after dropping the first set. She won the matches 2-6, 6-4, and 6-3 and relished her victory. The official Instagram account of the Australian Open shared a celebratory post for her, which showed her reaction after her win. They also added the caption, “This is what it means 🥹16-year-old @brendafruhvirtova defeats Ana Bogdan 2-6 6-4 6-3 for her FIRST Grand Slam win!”.

The former coach of Serena Williams also shared the post on his Instagram story with the caption, “Proud of you @brendafruhvirtova”. Patrick Mouratoglou, who is the head coach of the Patrick Mouratoglou Academy, guides the young WTA player and shows why the academy churns out champions. Fruhvirtova became the first teenage player since Coco Gauff in 2020 to win her debut bout in Australia.

This became the second time in four years that a teenage player won her debut main draw match in the WTA. The last time it took place in 2020, with a player who would go on to win the 2023 US Open.

Previous teenage debut winner Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff became known around the world for winning the debut grand slam match against Bedbugs Williams in the 2019 Wimbledon. Gauff would not stop there and only improved from that stage. Going into the 2020 season, Gauff would also win her debut match at the Australian Open. The stint would prove to be fruitful for her as she defeated defending champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

The teenage sensation couldn’t believe the fact that she won against Osaka and said she was elated with the victory. Gauff lost the following bout, but she did not lose heart and continued to improve. She would go on to win her first US slam last year, which the tennis world believes will be one of many more to come.
