“Early detection is key – it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that,” Serena Wiliams had said. Remember the moment when the tennis legend Williams recorded a version of The Divinyls classic song, ‘I Touch Myself’? It was a part of a campaign by Berlei that coincided with International Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) in 2018. Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society’s data, it accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers each year. However, Serena Williams was recently spotted highlighting how the survival rate has gone up with technological advancement and research works.
As per the American Cancer Society’s record, the average risk of a woman in the US developing breast cancer sometime in her life is around 13%, and breast cancer mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women. Serena Williams has been part of many such awareness campaigns in the past. For example, in 2018, when she launched that video clip featuring the ‘I Touch Myself Project,’ she explained that the music video was created in honor of the late Chrissy Amphlett, who had passed away from breast cancer in 2013.
It was a campaign to remind women to prioritize their health. Further speaking on that project, Serena Williams said, “Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it’s an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world.” Recently, the 43-year-old tennis legend turned heads with her stunning all-pink outfit at the Hot Pink Luncheon. What is Hot Pink Luncheon, though? Well, it’s an event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research.

She looked stunning in her monochromatic pink blush and eyeshadow along with her beautiful blonde hair. Serena Williams even shared two pictures from that event on her X handle with the caption, “Yesterday, I attended the Hot Pink Luncheon to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation @BCRFcure. They’re making a difference, working to find a cure. In 30 years, survival rates with women diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer have gone from 72% to 92% because of their research. 🎀” Are these the only moments when we saw her raising awareness about cancer?
In 2021, the tennis star was spotted completely shattered while revealing that her close friend and physio Esther Lee was battling with pancreatic cancer. She couldn’t hold her emotions while saying, “I don’t think I can do this, this is going to be too hard. My dear friend Esther has been a huge part of my own health journey, and now she needs our help as she battles pancreatic cancer.” At that time, Williams had even announced that she would participate in the LA Cancer Challenge 5K in Team Esther to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer.
Esther Lee was also the physical therapist for her elder sister, Venus Williams, in the past. In 2022, we even saw Serena Williams’ husband showcasing his love and support for Lee through an IG post that captioned, “We LOVE YOU.” On 11 October 2024, Serena Williams shared a funny moment from her health checkup. She highlighted the importance of breast cancer screening and revealed, “It is October, which means it is breast cancer awareness month. I am getting my check-up, and the doctor asked me to take everything off from the waist up. I also took off my wig #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #BreastCancerAwareness.“

Initially, it was diagnosed as a branchial cyst which required no immediate intervention, but later on, she was advised to remove it promptly even though it wasn’t cancerous.
