Women’s golf is taking longer strides these days! According to the National Golf Foundation’s report in 2023, approximately 7 million women and girls played golf on a course in 2023 (the highest participation levels since 2006). Then, a year later, their reports claimed that around 40% of all junior golfers are female. This rapid popularity not only offers a chance for development but also an investment opportunity for all entrepreneurs. Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, once said, “The silver lining of women’s sports being so underinvested was that they were so easy to invest in. You can try anything you want. There is no way that things have been done before.” Both of them are owners of multiple sports teams, including TGL’s Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC). What was the main reason behind Ohanian’s decision to be a part of this golf league in 2023?
TGL (TMRW Golf League) is a golf league created by TMRW Sports, a venture formed by sports executive Mike McCarley and professional golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour. In 2023, after acquiring the ownership of LAGC, Alexis Ohanian expressed his excitement and revealed that the league will follow a team format, which will bring “all the banter“, “camaraderie,” and “trash talking” that people love in team sports. According to the tech entrepreneur, this format will be “very appealing, even to a non-golf fan.”
Then later on, while explaining his decision to buy LAGC, he said, “My wife Serena [Williams] and I have enjoyed as Olympia’s taken a liking to golf, so I’m proud to announce that they’re both owners in this club as well — as is the little one!” All he now wants is to build “another piece of legacy” for his family with this team. But what really pushed him to become the first owner of this league, though? In a recently uploaded video clip on IG, Serena Williams’ husband was heard revealing, “Part of my pitch for why I wanted to be the first owner in the league was because I wanted a women’s team. And so I’ve been bugging these guys for the LPGA deal for a minute. They’ve been very interested. It’s just, these things take time.“

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is an American organization for female golfers. Speaking more about the real motivation behind all these, Alexis Ohanian further added, “Especially as a ‘Daddy Caddy’ to my daughter, the golf game apparently historically has not really been that accessible to women but it turns out there’s a ton of amazing athletes right now who also have massive social media followings.” Ohanian explained how the sport of golf is really captivating sport on the green and highlighted the differences between men and women’s game “actually kind of disappears in the short game.”
According to him, mixed tennis is fun, but it’s not as competitive as it should be. However, on the other hand, “Golf actually allows for that in some really interesting ways and it’s a unique sport in that regard. So, I’d love to see it.” Is it the first time he has spoken of a possible collaboration with LPGA?

Well, even in March this year, during an interaction with Front Office Sports, Alexis Ohanian was heard saying, “My very first question, at the very first pitch, was: ‘Why aren’t you doing the LPGA? When are you doing the LPGA? So, I invested under the condition that I’d have a right of first refusal for an L.A. women’s golf team. So, I have that, and I’m gonna exercise it.” He highlighted some of the names, including Rose Zhang, Nelly Korda, and a few others in order to explain the untapped potential here. How much is Serena Williams and their daughter Olympia into this sport, though?

How did Olympia fall in love with golf? In an interview, Alexis Ohanian revealed that “Golf’s been interesting since Uncle Tiger gifted me some clubs for [my daughter] Olympia. She’s been playing.” He also spoke about how he takes her for golfing lessons every Sunday. “It’s one of my favorite things to do with her. I’m still terrible. I’m still learning, but it’s interesting.” There have been several instances in the last few years when fans have seen Ohanian sharing glimpses of Olympia’s impressive swing during her golfing sessions.
How highly does he rate her golfing skills? “Sunday Daddy Caddy. She’s better than me, but I’m catching up,” he said in a tweet in 2023. Talking about tweets, on April 17, 2025, Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, shared a clip on his X handle where he highlighted their Sunday routines and added, “I recently realized she (Olympia) thinks golf is a girls-only sport… and all the old white guys on the driving range are just other dads waiting for their daughters. That lens, though? It’s everything. It keeps me grounded in the work I care about, and that’s the future I’m trying to build with two daughters.” What does Serena Williams think about this sport, though?

Well, in a previous interview with ESPN, she said that she’s very excited to be the team owner of LAGC in TGL. According to her, this is a league that she feels is completely different from others. What about her own golf skills? “No, but I did hit last Sunday, and that counts (laughs).” But she did mention, “My daughter plays golf. One was playing, and one was rolling around on her back, I am not kidding.” Share your thoughts on this golf-loving family and their various initiatives to uplift women’s sports.
