Serena Williams is no stranger to challenges. She’s faced down some of the fiercest opponents on the tennis courts, overcoming obstacles with the grace and power that have defined her legendary career. But there are some situations that even a champion like Serena can find perplexing—especially when they’re far removed from the tennis arena. And this time, the challenge is about something much more personal and, dare we say, intimate: her breastmilk.
Williams gave birth to her second daughter Adira in August last year. But even after a year, she has failed to overcome her struggle with breastmilk. In an Instagram video that was shared on August 15, Williams can be heard expressing her concern over the excessive breastmilk, which she has stored in cold storage and is failing to put to use.
Speaking in the video, Williams revealed the history of the bulk of breastmilk. “Ok, so when I was breastfeeding, I had these two freezers. Both were actually filled with breast milk. Adira’s breast milk. I keep it in super cool (storage) to last more than six months.” Continuing further, she revealed that while she had just one freezer initially, she had to get a second one given the increasing quantity. But now, the star player is left with two freezers full of breast milk and she does not know what to do with it.

“So I put it in a deep freeze, but how long can I actually keep it? I was told like a year but, that’s a lot enough, and how do you stop making them.” In the video, the star tennis player is revealing her situation as she points her camera over the freezers which have nothing but breastmilk with Adira written on them. This comes just after months when Williams demonstrated a heartfelt gesture towards several mothers.

In December 2023, Williams traveled to New York and found herself with a bit of leftover breast milk. In a heartwarming gesture, the tennis star decided to donate it to a milk bank, instead of tossing it out. She herself spoke about the incident as she stood in solidarity with fellow mothers.
In an Instagram post, Williams wrote, “I know so many amazing women that adopt or are unable to make milk. It felt amazing.” Sharing a video of a freezer full of milk to be donated, she added, “BTW Someone out there is getting some super soldier milk.” Amid her bid to help out fellow moms, Serena did not fail to celebrate her youngest daughter’s first birthday with pomp and glamour.

Continuing further, Serena highlighted the changes that she observed after Adira was born. “Then Adira came along … she is so special, so fun, so funny, so loving, so sweet and so strong!!! You see, God makes your heart get bigger. Because my love for Olympia has not dimmed. My heart simply now is doubled the size and I have a greater capacity to love more!.”
As the family continues to strengthen their dynamics and Serena finds joy in her little daughter Adira, she would want to continue helping the fellow mothers in any way she could.
