TikTok should be American-owned” – Last year, Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, strongly backed the US House for passing a bill against the “strategic threat” of Chinese ownership. He said it was a little “validating” for him because he has been advocating this for years. Ohanian wasn’t too sure at that time about who could possibly be the new owner of this social media platform. Fast forward twelve months, he has now joined former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and Shark Tank fame Kevin O’Leary’s ‘The People’s Bid’ to acquire TikTok’s US operations from its Chinese parent company, Byte Dance. What are Williams’ thoughts on this bold TikTok move, though?

Alexis Ohanian’s entry into this acquisition process has been just in time, as TikTok is currently facing some serious pressure from the US government. The app even faced a brief ban earlier this year. As things stand, if it can’t find a new owner, then we could possibly yet again see TikTok getting banned in the US. Why could Ohanian be the right guy for this acquisition?

Well, we all know that Serena Williams’ husband founded Reddit with his roommate from the University of Virginia. However, he later sold it to Conde Nast in 2006 and then made a return in 2014 as executive chair to help them make a turnaround. Alexis Ohanian holds extensive expertise in social media. He had also previously invested in several tech companies like Patreon, Instacart, and even OpenSea.

Speaking about this bold move of bidding for TikTok US, he recently shared a tweet stating, “Exciting news for the digital world…I’m officially now one of the people trying to buy TikTok US — and bring it on-chain. TikTok has been a game-changer for creators, and its future should be built by them.” Then, recently, he yet again teased his fans saying that a big announcement about this deal will be made on March 6. “That was fun. Now let’s announce something big tomorrow. Won’t be onchain (yet), but it’ll be exciting.”

After seeing all the buzz around this acquisition, now Serena Williams also steps in to show support for her husband’s decision to bid for TikTok US. In her IG stories, she recently reshared a post from ‘The Armenian Report’ which highlighted Ohanian’s bold TikTok move. Interestingly, this move from Ohanian comes right after Elon Musk showcased his disinterest in buying the popular video-sharing platform. Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and later renamed it to X.

What would be the new name of TikTok if Ohanian manages to complete this acquisition? Well, in reply to this question from a fan, he said that he could possibly rename it to “TikTok: Freedom Edition.” Ohanian also expressed his excitement to work on this project as he hopes to offer people more control over their data through “The People’s Bid.

Even Frank McCourt recently gave his reaction on having the $150 worth internet entrepreneur and investor in the team. He said, “He (Ohanian) has that broad portfolio of experience … of where social media was and, I think, a keen understanding of where it’s evolving.” We have seen plenty of reactions coming in on this bold move by Ohanian, but is it the first time we’ve seen Serena Williams showcasing her support towards her husband’s bigger ambitions?

What’s your perspective on:

Can Alexis Ohanian's TikTok bid redefine American social media, or is it just wishful thinking?
