Serena Williams and Venus Williams are two of the greatest athletes in the history of women’s tennis. In careers spanning for almost three decades, the two have some of the greatest records to their names, individually, as well as in pairs. However, what happens when the two are compared to their male counterparts?

Yesterday, 13th March, the Williams sisters graced the occasion of Critics Choice Awards with their presence. The two attended the premiere awards ceremony as part of the team ‘King Richard’, to which they serve as the executive producers. Both the sisters received immense gratitude and love, coupled with a standing ovation from the fellow attendees. However, in all the love showered upon the sisters, what came out as a strange incident was the dig by ace director Jane Campion, who won the award for Best Director, for her film ‘The Power of the Dog.’

Jane Campion takes a dig at Venus and Serena Williams

During her acknowledgment speech for the ‘Best Director’ Award, the 67-year-old director started off on a high note for the two sisters, calling it an honor to be in the same room with them. “It’s absolutely stunning to be here tonight among so many incredible women… Venus and Serena what an honor to be in the room with you,” she said.

She further told the sisters that she has taken up tennis and would love it if the two sisters would come and give her lessons. However, despite showering all praise for the two sisters, what Jane said next took everyone to surprise.

Even though the New Zealand born director called Venus and Serena Williams marvelous, she went on to compare them with their male counterparts, in a way that looked like a ‘taunt said in a polite way’. She said, “You are marvels; however, you don’t play against the guys like I have to.”

Even though the attendees, including the Williams sisters, took the words in a sporting way, that wasn’t the case online. Following her words, Jane received outrage from Wiliams sisters’ fans on social media. The ‘Best Director’ recipient received hefty criticism online for taking the dig at the sisters.
