Tennis is one of the highest-paying individual sports in the world. The players who have reached the zenith of the game earn millions of dollars through prize money, endorsements, bonuses, and appearance fees. So, a lot is at stake for the players in this racket sport. But the sport has some obscure rules and regulations that pop out of nowhere frequently. The legend of the game, Martina Navratilova has a say on one such rule. What is it?
Among the varieties of nuanced rules in tennis, one of the noteworthy rules is ‘Let‘. Rule 22 is one of the strangest occurrences in the rule book of tennis. A ‘Let‘ is often called during a game when a point has been interrupted in some way or the other. While some players have enjoyed the loophole, others have constantly raised their voices against it. What does Martina Navratilova feel about this?

A ‘Let‘ in tennis denotes an instance where players replay an entire point except on a second serve. Moreover, it brings out the human element in the sport. But it’s very controversial too, as it has a high chance of bringing arguments and disagreements into the game. It can break the free flow of the match, which can be really frustrating for the fans. So, the ‘No Let‘ rule sometimes creeps up in the scene to increase the speed of the game. We’ve seen this in a few of the Fast4 tennis events. Even the famous exhibition series of ITPL showcased this new addition to the world of tennis. Here’s how former world number one, Martina Navratilova reacted to Steve Weissman’s proposal.
“Been screaming that for about 20 years!!! NO MORE LETS!!!!’ said the 18 major title holders. Martina Navratilova has been known to the sports world for speaking her mind out as much as she is known for her achievements on the court. There are several complaints and controversies associated with the game, but players have never shown a lesser commitment to the sport. To be world number 1 in singles for almost 332 weeks is one such example.

But there is a note to keep in mind though. You can find players with this rule but don’t get confused when they call ‘let’ as ‘net’. It’s just because it mostly happens when the ball hits the net on the serve.

Martina Navratilova certainly has a point regarding this ‘strange’ rule
There have been several instances in the past where we have seen top players finding themselves on the ‘right‘ side of what seems a ‘wrong‘ rule of the game to many. Serena Williams snatched a victory over Ayumi Morita with as many as four service lets in a row in 2013. Roger Federer did it in 2016 QFs of Wimbledon with 3 in a row. Even Wu Di, the Chinese pro tennis player has achieved the feat by featuring among the top in this list.
What may seem harsh to some, can be ‘Fortune favors the Brave‘ for others. This rule, like any other competitive thing acts as a double-edged sword. What is your take on this most widely talked about rule in tennis? Comment on your thoughts below!
