Team USA celebrated a triumphant conclusion to the 2025 United Cup, clinching their second title in three years. Led by Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, they defeated Poland in Sydney on Sunday. Gauff was the standout player, winning all her matches. At just 20, Coco Gauff has achieved so much on the court, yet her inexperience occasionally shines through, however not always on the court.

Gauff set the tone in the final with a thrilling 6-4, 6-4 victory over Iga Swiatek, marking her second straight win against the former world No. 1. Following her lead, Fritz secured the title with a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) win over Hubert Hurkacz in a match featuring 30 aces. Gauff finished the tournament undefeated with a perfect 5-0 singles record. She didn’t drop a single set in the tournament.

The team celebrated their victory with champagne, a video of which was posted by the United Cup Instagram account. While her teammates effortlessly popped their bottles, Gauff was hilariously struggling to get hers open. She later reposted a video on her own Instagram story, captioning it, “First time popping a bottle lol #rookie.”

Coco Gauff triumphed in all four of her singles matches in the United Cup, against Canada, Croatia, China, and Czechia respectively. Her stellar performance earned her praise from Taylor Fritz, who said, “She’s consistently putting us in a winning position where I can go out and know that if I take care of business, we don’t need to leave it up to a mixed where honestly anything can happen. None of us really play a lot of mixed doubles.”

Gauff opens up about what’s got her going this season

Coco Gauff delivered an impressive performance at the United Cup, particularly in her final match against Iga Swiatek. After initially squandering a 2-0 lead in the opening set, Gauff capitalized on Swiatek’s 19 unforced errors to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory. This win not only marks her second consecutive win against the Pole but also shows her consistent improvement from the lows of the previous season. While the American player clinched her first title in Auckland last year, she had a tough time in the middle phase of the season before she won the China Open and the WTA Finals.

Reflecting on her success, Gauff stated, “I think just confidence. I think I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world and when I play good tennis, I’m hard to beat.” Her newfound positive attitude is evident, and her opponents should take note. “Today I think I played some great tennis. I’m glad I was able to get a point for Team USA. It was tough today. I’m not gonna lie,” Gauff added after her match.

Instead of competing at the ASB Classic in Auckland, Gauff chose to make her United Cup debut this season. She sought a higher level of competition and loved the team aspect of the United Cup. “I had a lot of fun with the Paris Olympics. The season’s already so much by ourselves that it’s nice to mix it up,” she explained. Now with her sights set on doing well at the 2025 Australian Open, could Gauff win her second Grand Slam title in Melbourne? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
