Garbine Muguruza opens up about taking inspiration from Serena Williams
In a recent interview, the Spaniard talked about Serena‘s retirement news, which made her quite emotional. “I really cried when I saw the news because she inspired many of us and I’m one of those girls that started in a very difficult spot playing tennis, having zero options to become a tennis player,” Muguruza said.

Later in the interview, the former world no.1 talked about how her mother told her to emulate both Venus and Serena’s journey. “I remember my mom always saying like ‘look at these sisters and they made it and look how fearless they are and you have to be like them’. Well, thanks to her I became the player I am,” she further said.
It is worth noting that both Muguruza and Serena faced each other six times in their career and they both won 3 matches. Moreover, they played in two Grand Slam finals, in Wimbledon in 2015 and the French Open in 2016. At Wimbledon, the American tennis star won against the Spaniard.
However, Muguruza got her revenge, as she beat Serena in the French Open final the next year. The last time they played against one another was back in 2019 at Indian Wells, where Serena retired from the match.
