Serena Williams‘ businessman husband, Alexis Ohanian, has an agenda of taking women’s sports to the sky. Being one of Angel City FC’s primary owners, Ohanian previously expressed his desire to flourish the women’s soccer scene. Now, the Reddit co-founder has dropped his attention to another underrated women’s sport in the US track and field. Pumped by his debut attendance in an event in the sport, Ohanian recalls how his experience brought back those anxious days when his wife played the Grand Slams.
Ohanian confirmed to ESPN in April that his venture capital, Seven Seven Six, decided to invest in women’s track and field with 776 Invitational. 776 Invitational is an all-female track event featuring a whopping $60,000 prize for the winner, and it will feature Olympian Gabby Thomas. Attending the track and field event at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field for June’s US Olympic trials, Ohanian found himself mesmerized by the talented athletes.
“Seeing in person, it was a little bit of Grand Slam PTSD, It was a fountain of stories, a fountain of storylines, a fountain of drama in those trials. So I definitely was spoiled to have that be my very first. But it also opened my eyes … and reinforced the idea this is a huge opportunity,” said the Reddit co-founder.

His enthusiasm yet anxious feeling he encountered at the track and field event evoked the memory of his wife’s Grand Slam matches. Being the husband of a tennis legend, Ohanian understands how such events created pressure not just on the athletes but their family members who support them.
He is one of the principal investors and owners of Angel City FC and has further spoken about investing in the Sports Bra (a bar based in Portland dedicated to broadcasting women’s sports on their television) and expanding it. Believing “in the power of sports to drive positive change and inspire future generations,” Ohanian wished to elevate the “profile of female athletes and create a more inclusive and equitable sporting landscape,“ through his investments.
