Despite being a 19-year-old, Coco Gauff has always maintained her sound take on the issues off the court. The American tennis sensation has in fact vocally voiced her take on social issues. Once again, a new situation popped up when environmentalists staged an unexpected protest during her semi-final match at the US Open. Gauff later on dwelled on the topic and once again proved her mature take even if she could not hide the little disappointment behind the whole issue.

Gauff has taken down French Open finalist Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals to secure a place at the finals of the US Open. However, this did not come in full glory as few environmentalists disrupted the run mid-match.

The 19-year-old went all in with her astounding run in the semi-finals against Karolina Muchova. However, four environmentalists stood up in protest wearing T-shirts saying, “End Fossil Fuels.”

The security and police escorted the three protestors out of the stadium. However, the issue erupted when the fourth one glued his bare feet to the floor. To remove the person safely, even doctors had to be called. This eventually delayed Gauff’s victory by 50 minutes.

During her post-match conference, she conveyed her views on the issue. She stated, “I think that throughout history moments like this are definitely defining moments.” Even though, she did not know what they were protesting for, she stated, “I definitely, I believe, you know, in climate change. I think there are things we can do better.”

However, she also did not hide her honest feelings about it taking place during her match. She stated, “Would I prefer it not happening in my match? 100%, yeah. I’m not gonna sit here and lie (smiling). But it is what it is.”

She even talked about her gut feeling and stated, “I had a feeling it was going to happen this tournament.” After the French Open and Wimbledon, she was sure it would take place here, However, she also stated, “I just was hoping it wasn’t in my match, and honestly I thought we made it through.”

But she also made it clear that she did not have anything against the protestors. Gauff understood their perspective and decided to move past the incident.

The American player was leading by 1-0 in the second set and wanted to continue the momentum. However, the match was halted for 50 minutes straight.

Nonetheless, she did not accuse the protestors. She stated, “I wasn’t p**sed at the protesters. I know the stadium was because it just interrupted entertainment.”

Accepting the situation as it is, Gauff chose to see the motive of the protestors and respected their opinion. The members of a social movement, Extinction Rebellion staged the protest. This environmental faction came into the limelight during the Wimbledon protests too. The environmentalists condemned Wimbledon’s collaboration with Barclays during the major.
