French tennis star Alize Cornet is certainly off to a great start at the Australian Open 2022. She just knocked out the third seed, Garbine Muguruza, from the competition in straight sets.

Subsequently, the 6-time WTA title winner is set to meet the 29th seed Tamara Zidansek in the third round of the Grand Slam. However, her fans were in for a sad surprise today when Cornet shared that she had been mulling retirement.

In fact, the 31-year-old stated that this could very well be her final year as a professional tennis player.

Alize Cornet is ready for her next chapter

Alize Cornet has stated that this could be her last year on the tennis circuit. Of course, the decision isn’t completely concrete, as she is not ready to close the doors on her career just yet.

Before hanging up her tennis shoes, Cornet did state that she had one final goal in mind. As it so happens, she is currently three Grand Slams away from the record of most consecutive Grand Slam events played in the main draw.

“I’m telling myself I’m playing probably my last year,” Alize expressed. However, she is “not sure yet”. Moreover, she looks forward to the rest of the year, where she would be mulling over her retirement thoughts throughout.

By her own admission, Alize Cornet is “trying to beat this Grand Slam record”. Following that achievement, she believes that “it’ll be a good time for (me) to retire”.

Even in her on-court interview after defeating Garbine Muguruza in round 2 of the Australian Open, Cornet stated that she doesn’t know how many years she has left. However, it is inconsequential, because going forward, she simply wants to have fun playing on the tour.

Cornet didn’t expect to win this match

Speaking about her next match in round three of the major, Cornet revealed that she didn’t even know who she’d be playing against.

“I have no idea against who I’m playing,” Cornet revealed. In fact, this is because she didn’t expect to win against Muguruza. “When I saw the draw, I really stopped at Garbine,” she revealed, as the crowd chuckled alongside her.
