Iga Swiatek relinquished the world number 1 spot to Aryna Sabalenka when she lost in the US Open. The Belarusian star has been at the top of the WTA but has not shown any big performances following her US Open final. Now, some tennis experts are wondering if the pressure of being number 1 is affecting her.

As Sabalenka is being bombarded with the stress of being at the top, Iga Swiatek is currently flying smoothly. The Polish player has won a prominent tournament after her defeat in the US Open and closed the gap between her and regaining the number 1 spot again.

Tennis experts believe Iga Swiatek will flourish while Aryna Sabalenka will fall

In the weekly segment of The AO Show, the members of the podcast talked about the scene of the WTA. As the WTA Finals is about to commence, the round table discussion led with the possible winner being either Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek. Matt Trollope, an Australian tennis journalist, said that Sabalenka is currently feeling the pressure of being number 1 and that she might not win the Finals.

Well, she’s actively stated that that’s her goal for the rest of the season. She’s gotten to number one, but she wants to finish there. So there is a pressure that comes with that. At exactly the same time that you mentioned, there’s a pressure released on Swiatek because she’s not number one anymore, and I think she referenced that when she won Beijing. She’s playing with more of a freedom because she doesn’t have the burden of the number one ranking anymore.”

He further said that Iga Swiatek has a better chance of winning since she has a free mind at the moment. He said, “So in this kind of perverse or, you know, like Sabalenka is the one that wants it more, but it might actually be should be Swiatek that’s freed up to play her better tennis, which might get it back.” Pressure causes performance to go down. Swiatek’s current mindset perhaps makes her more likely to get back at the top. There is some truth to their claims. Swiatek has reestablished the reason she became number 1 in the first place after the US Open concluded.

Iga Swiatek has been flourishing since losing number 1

After the French Open champion lost her number 1 spot, she became emotional when addressing the press. She vowed to become the number 1 WTA player again, and she is performing in tune with her promise. Since she lost the American slam, Swiatek showed a masterclass to her fans and defeated each player in her path to win the Masters in the China Open.

Iga Swiatek only dropped one set on her way to the win and even beat Coco Gauff, the US Open champion, in the semifinal. The four-time grand slam champion has regained her form to some extent. The WTA Finals is the only remaining tournament for the stars, and the Polish player only has eyes for the big prize.
