Billie Jean King is among the most inspirational figures in the tennis world today. Apart from being the most prolific tennis player of her time, King is a pioneer in raising gender equality and social rights issues. The 78-year-old has inspired many with her thoughts over the years and also runs an organization called Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative. The non-profit organization promotes diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace.

Being a role model for many women out there, King recently collaborated with Johnnie Walker for a billboard campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to celebrate equality and achievements of women in sports.

What’s the campaign all about?

The campaign will feature out-of-home (OOH) billboards with quotes from King that will be inspirational for the future generation of women to take up sports. Also, the campaign aims to inspire women to follow their dreams, as there are still many fields underrepresented by women.

The billboards are present in the US Open venue, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Here are a few of the quotes and their location.

  • Northern Boulevard and Broadway: “Create your legacy and pass the baton.”
  • Astoria Boulevard and Steinway Street: “It’s often been asked if I’m a woman or an athlete. I am an athlete. I am a woman.”
  • Northern Boulevard between 35th and 42nd Avenue: “It’s important to support those on the journey to break glass ceilings.”
  • Northern Boulevard and 48th Street: “Pressure is a privilege.”
  • Lie and Van Dam Street: “It wasn’t about a tennis match, it was about social change.”

Notably, Johnnie Walker will also donate to the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative.

It’s a nice initiative from the scotch brand to promote equality and fair representation of women in the workplace. Especially, words from someone like King will definitely go a long way in making an impact.

The former world number 1 took to her Instagram account and praised Mari Osaka for her successful transition from tennis to fashion designing. Notably, the elder Osaka sister hung her rackets and pursued her interest in fashion design.

She recently came up with a new clothing collection with her unique designs. This caught the eye of the tennis legend who was all praise of the former Japanese professional player. Subsequently, King posted multiple stories on her Instagram account about Osaka’s new clothing line and also explained how being an ex-tennis player gives her a completely unique perspective.

Furthermore, the 78-year-old also said that this proves there are endless opportunities for athletes in life after they give up the sport. While there are examples of successful athletes like Serena making her mark in business, it’s interesting to see young athletes, also following in their footsteps.
