Since the rise of Coco Gauff four years ago, she has time and again been compared to the American tennis legend Serena Williams. Although she was always keeping a humble outlook on the comparison, the teenage sensation has now started to form her own legacy after bagging her maiden Grand Slam title. And it flabbergasted none other than the legendary Serena Williams herself. She couldn’t contain her excitement while hailing the 19-year-old tennis star for winning the US Open. The 19-year-old tennis star has repeatedly reminded people to not compare her to Serena Williams. Despite taking the comparisons as a compliment, she still wanted people to understand that they are two different human beings.
However, that does not mean she did not idolize the legacy Williams has left for young tennis players to admire. That is why when Serena Williams hailed her maiden Grand Slam title win, Gauff had nothing but gratitude for her idol.
Serena Williams shared the wishes through her Instagram story, as she wrote, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Amazing!!!!!!!!”. Resharing that, Gauff hailed Williams and stated, “The queen, thank you.” Furthermore, she left a small yet impactful message and stated, “Only because of you.”
Gauff acknowledges the things Williams has done for young tennis players like her. And as usual, Gauff has acted maturely, crediting the ‘Queen of the Court’ for the example she has set for the upcoming generation of tennis players.
Besides Serena Williams, Gauff did not forget to credit Billie Jean King while receiving her US Open title.
