The year 1988 will forever be written in golden in the history books for the American Olympic team. One of the nation’s greatest Olympians, Greg Louganis, scripted history by winning two gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. With this, the legendary springboard diver successfully defended his titles in 3m Springboard and 10m Platform. Louganis called time on his illustrious career shortly after the Seoul games, winning four Olympic gold medals and a silver medal apart from other feats. As memories of that famous win cropped up, American legend, Venus Williams shared a heartfelt tribute to Louganis.

Earlier today, Los Angeles 2028 games’ official Instagram handle, la28games honored Louganis by sharing a clip of his famous victory at the 1988 Seoul Games. Williams shared the clip on her Instagram story and revealed that she was in awe of his achievements while growing up. The American legend wrote, “One of my heroes @greglouganis his 1988 win wow.” Williams followed it up by adding a golden star emoji, showing her admiration for one of the greatest divers in the history of the sport.

With a net worth of $2 Million, Louganis is the only man to win a gold medal in both springboard and platform events at the Olympics. While his sporting achievements are a cut above many, he also holds numerous remarkable feats beyond the sport. The American legend is a long-time advocate of the LGBTQ+ community and has also raised awareness for HIV as he has been a victim himself.

Interestingly, it was her father who asked Williams to follow athletes like Louganis to realize their Olympic dream. She once took to social media and said, “He would have us watch Olympic documentary films of track and field stars like Jackie Joyner-Kersee or diving legend Greg Louganis so we could understand what it meant to be tough and to find courage and triumph through adversity.”

Meanwhile, Williams is also in the news surrounding her comeback at the age of 44. The American legend will return to action during the Indian Wells Masters tournament.

Venus Williams is not allowed to quit

During an interview once, Venus Williams revealed, “My little sister, Serena, told me I’m not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit.” Looks like those words are turning out to be true as the American legend is gearing up for a comeback at the upcoming Sunshine Double. Recently, she even sparked comeback rumors by sharing a picture of her returning back to training on the court.

Subsequently, it was revealed that Williams had been handed a wildcard entry into the main draw of the Indian Wells tournament. With this, Williams would return to action after almost a year away from the WTA Tour. She last played at the Miami Open back in March 2024 where she lost in the first round.

Apart from Williams, Czech legend Petra Kvitova was also handed a wildcard entry into the Indian Wells main draw. The first leg of the Sunshine Double begins on March 2 and will guarantee two weeks of non-stop tennis action.
