On her home turf, Coco Gauff opened her Grand Slam title tally at the recently concluded US Open. In three grueling sets, the 19-year-old tennis sensation defeated her formidable foe on the tour, Aryna Sabalenka. After securing her maiden major title, the new world No. 3 player now stands as the youngest American teenager to do so, since the ‘Queen of the Court,’ Serena Williams. But something didn’t go quite right on that magical night.

In addition to a flurry of American fans, it was particularly a special moment for the WTA player’s family, who was present in the stands during the championship match. Even her mother, Candi Gauff, was beaming with pride. But she also had a cool way of honoring her daughter’s first major victory in a combined effort that involved her sponsors. The subsequent events, nevertheless, didn’t work out in her favor as there was a major blunder in New York.

Being one of the popular figures in the American WTA circuit, the 19-year-old previously bagged an endorsement deal with the $5,300,000,000 Boston-based sportswear company, New Balance. Now that their brand ambassador was just one victory away from winning the US Open, they decided to release the “Call Me Champion” shirt if she did. Coco Gauff’s family signed off on the New Balance celebratory t-shirt and were waiting to break out the championship swag.

When Coco clinched the title, Candi Gauff was left shocked, as things didn’t go according to plan. In an interview with Andscape, the head of global tennis for New Balance Evan Zeder revealed, “Candi looked at me and was like, ‘Where’s that ‘Call Me Champion’ shirt?’ ” According to Zeder’s recent disclosures, his sportswear company didn’t sell any of those t-shirts onsite on the night of Gauff’s title match event. The package, which contained about 50 ‘Call Me Champion’ shirts, was only distributed at the camp for the American tennis star. The only exception was one shirt, which Candi Gauff handed to a young child as he asked her, “‘Can I have one?'”
