Is Qinwen Zheng's no-friends policy the secret to becoming the next Serena Williams?

Chinese WTA star Qinwen Zheng has a strict policy on tour. Remember that Vogue interview where she received criticism for her unique perspectives about friendship? Well, the WTA star might not have changed a lot over the years. In a recent confession, she delved deeper into her interactions with her competitors like Iga Swiatek or Aryna Sabalenka and showed why she might be the next Serena Williams in terms of strict professionalism.

Zheng offered an interesting revelation about interacting with her competitors on tour. Earlier in a press conference, the WTA star confirmed that she doesn’t make tennis players her friends, When a journalist asked why she maintains a distance from her competitors, Zheng said, “I prefer always keep the distance with the player. Has a lot of competition with me. I don’t feel if I become friend with someone and I have to compete with them on court, I feel I’m not able to 100% focus and fighting.”

After this surprising revelation, Zheng made another blunt admission about her interactions with her competitors during tournaments. “We are just saying hello. Sometimes say congrats to your great season. No more talk with no more people. I never go for more. I don’t try to go for more, as well, yeah,” she said. The Chinese WTA star’s response expressed her competitive mindset. She focuses on her goal and doesn’t want it to get affected by her feelings for any of her opponents.

Why I have to just make friends here? I come here to compete with them, to win the match,” she said putting an end to any possible friendship with any players. Zheng is attending the WTA Tour Finals in Riyadh with Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and others. However, her statement highlighted that she won’t be spending time with any of her talented opponents.

Zheng’s perspectives haven’t changed. In an interview with Vogue China years back, the WTA star offered a similar opinion. “I have not changed the thought (of not making friends on tour), because if I wanna make true friends, I’d want the best for them, but they’d also want to win, it’s difficult to compete with friends, they’d not be happy if they lose, and I’ll not be happy either if I lost,” she said.
