Maria Sharapova joined ESPN’s commentary team for the semifinal match between Caroline Garcia and Ons Jabeur for the 2022 US Open. Sharapova highlighted Serena Williams’ farewell at the US Open this year during her visit.
Sharapova talks about Serena Williams’ career run
While talking about the US Open, she also talked about Serena Williams’ retirement that took place in the US Open. In the third round, Williams was defeated by Australian, Ajla Tomljanovic, which clearly turned out to be her last match. She praised Serena by saying, “It was amazing to see Serena’s run and the glory and the gracious tenacity as she carried through to the end of her career.”
Maria Sharapova hailed her old teammate Serena Williams after she announced her retirement while criticizing the new generation of women’s tennis champions. She recalled, “We spoke about it at the Met last year during this time of year and I said no disrespect to this generation but you are so much better and you need to go out there, so I’m glad that she had a chance here,”
The Russian player also recounted her participation at the US Open. Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open against Justine Henin.

Williams and Sharapova’s popular rivalry
One of the most well-known rivalries of the past twenty years was between Sharapova and Williams. In contrast, Williams has prevailed in 20 of the 22 contests between the players. Williams and Sharapova had a number of epic bouts, but the American was far more successful.
At the 2004 Miami Masters, Williams and Sharapova faced off for the first time, with Serena winning in straight sets. At the age of 17, Maria Sharapova defeated the magnificent Williams to win the 2004 Wimbledon championship, earning her maiden Grand Slam victory.
