Coco Gauff was stunned by her fellow American Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Wimbledon on Monday. While it was the overwhelming consensus that Gauff would win the contest, given that she was seeded seventh and that Kenin had injury problems and was not in great form, the match tilted in Kenin’s favor. Gauff faced a determined opponent in Kenin who had to come through the Wimbledon qualifiers and all that but yet she was the victor in the match with the final scoreline 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

It is also to be noted that this was Gauff’s earliest-ever defeat at Wimbledon. Gauff, who was last year’s French Open finalist, couldn’t attack the game of Kenin, and Kenin steamrolled her, especially in the third set. However, after the match, Gauff vowed to make changes in her game and come back strong after such a discouraging loss.

Coco Gauff said that she was very frustrated and disappointed after the match. While Gauff says she has been working hard, she admitted that hasn’t provided the desired results. So she said the thing she needs to do is work harder and look to improve her forehand, which her opponents target these days. She says she needs to go to the drawing board. World No.7 Gauff opined that she failed to put pressure on Kenin.

She said: ?Right now I?m very frustrated and disappointed. So, yeah, I think it makes me want to work even harder. I feel like I have been working hard, but clearly, it?s not enough. I have to go back to the drawing board and see where I need to improve and how to do the right drills to do that.?

What undid Gauff against Kenin?

It was a very untidy performance by Coco Gauff. She had five double faults compared to Kenin’s none. She couldn’t convert most of the break points either, and though she fired twelve aces, which was eleven more than Kenin, the rest of her game was haphazard. As Gauff said, she failed to put any sort of pressure on her opponent and she, in the end, left it too late for any possible fightback.

A lot was expected from Gauff this Wimbledon with many believing that she could go deep at the tournament but Gauff couldn’t even cross the first hurdle. Of course, there is no shame in losing to a former Grand Slam champion like Kenin. But she has been out of sorts for nearly two years and nobody gave a chance ahead of this match.

It has been a disappointing year for Gauff so far as she crashed out of Australian Open in the fourth round; had to suffer a quarterfinal loss at the French Open, and the Wimbledon loss has been the latest in a series of letdowns.
