Ashleigh Barty remains on top of the world
Ashleigh Barty, in her final match against Danielle Collins at the Australian Open 2022, put on a phenomenal performance. Barty took the first set off her opponent with ease, winning 6 games to 3.
However, Danielle Collins seemed to bounce right back, securing an almost-insurmountable 5-1 lead in the second set. Nevertheless, Barty refused to back down into a final set and showed the heart of a champion.

Winning five consecutive games against Collins, Barty forced a tie-break, where she ultimately won 7-2, thus winning the championship. Hence, at the end of the first Grand Slam of the year, Ashleigh Barty remains the World No. 1 in the WTA.
Spanish 2-time Grand Slam winner, Garbine Muguruza, is now in the seventh rank. Muguruza was the World No. 3 prior to the commencement of the tournament. However, French international Alize Cornet knocked her out in a shock upset in the second round itself.
Consequently, Muguruza dropped four places in the rankings. Furthermore, 20-year-old Polish star Iga Swiatek went deep into the tournament, reaching the semi-final. Even though Collins defeated Swiatek in straight sets in the semis, Iga boosted her ranking by five places, going from number 9 to number 4. This is certainly a remarkable achievement for her to crack into the top 5 at merely 20 years of age.
Danielle Collins finally cracks into the top 10
Additionally, Ashleigh Barty’s fellow finalist, Danielle Collins, too, propelled her rank forward majorly. Collins had been a mainstay in the top 30 ever since her debut; a feat remarkable in itself, let alone for someone who went pro aged 22.
Collins, who had entered the Australian Open as the World No. 30, has moved up a whopping twenty places. In doing so, Collins has replaced Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur as the World No. 10.
Moreover, in the top 10 rankings, Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who had been the World No. 7, has fallen two places. Kontaveit’s Australian Open run came to an end in the second round itself, against Danish Clara Tauson.
