Does Coco Gauff's family support give her an edge over her competitors on the court?

“And thank you to my mom. She’s here. She’s been playing Uno, letting me win at Uno and my dad too.” These were Coco Gauff’s heartwarming words after she dominated the China Open final match and won in one hour and 17 minutes! By defeating Karolina Muchova by 6-1, 6-3, Gauff clinched her second WTA 1000 event title after repeated setbacks throughout the year. Breaking her almost nine-month title drought (after an ASB Classic victory), Gauff is again set to climb back to the top-5 ranking as well! Moreover, her mother’s adorable reaction made the 20-year-old’s victory even sweeter!

Soon after her title triumph in Beijing, Gauff posted some pictures (on Instagram) of her unforgettable moments on-court with the trophy. While one revealed the American sitting on the blue tennis court with the coveted trophy, another captured her kissing the golden trophy. “I’m happy with the fight I showed during the past two weeks here in Beijing and very grateful to walk away with the @chinaopen title❤️. Thank you for all of the love and support!” she captioned the images. The 2023 US Open champion also clicked a few pictures with her team, including her mother, Candi, where Gauff was standing at the center, smiling while holding the trophy along with the others (also smiling).

Besides taking a selfie with the team (gesturing a victory sign), Gauff also clicked another photo (holding her trophy) with her smiling mother in which she is pointing at her black t-shirt that had Coco Gauff’s pictures from the tennis courts along with her name written on it.

Her mother’s excitement was evident and she also left a comment on the post that read, “Amazing fight!!!! Never say die!!!” Not only in times of victories, Candi’s comforting messages even during her daughter’s setbacks have also captured fans’ attention.

The most recent one was when Gauff posted (on Instagram) about her disappointment after the round-of-16 US Open exit and vowed to come back stronger the next year. Her mother reshared it on her Instagram with two heart emojis (tagging her). A few days ago, Candi, who is a constant presence in Gauff’s matches, also spent some quality time with her in China, visiting the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City. Candi also celebrated National Daughters Day by posting some adorable pictures displaying their fun moments and captioning it, “@cocogauff National Daughters Day.”

Moreover, earlier in an interview, Gauff came forward with her mental health struggles, recalling the “dark place” and how she overcame it. Soon, Candi shared the post (having Gauff’s statements in a post made by the official Instagram account of Wimbledon) on her Instagram. She added multiple heart emojis to show her love and support for Gauff.

After clinching her first title of the season in January, Gauff struggled to reach a singles final round in any of the following matches. Despite winning a French Open doubles title, her stuttering form made her fall below the top 5 ranking. She took the matter into her own hands and fired her coach (Brad Gilbert) after 14 months and joined hands with Matt Daly. Now that she won her first tournament after the coaching change, she showed her gratitude to him and the other team members!

“Thank you, Matt. This is our first tournament together and obviously it’s going well so thank you for helping me throughout this week and thank you to Felipe for letting me win at soccer tennis every day and thanks to Maria for losing at soccer tennis every day.” Gauff also congratulated her opponent, the Czech player, Karolina, and praised her for being an “amazing player” who “deserves everything.” Gauff’s next destination is the Wuhan Open and as she soars through new heights, her family and team members’ support will certainly push her to climb the ladder of success!
