Apart from being a dominant force in tennis, Serena Williams is also known to have dominated the fashion industry for long. The American tennis icon over the years, blended fashion with her love for the game and stood out of the box with her unique personality, whenever she came to play on the tennis courts. The same thing was witnessed at the Australian Open back in 2019.

Coming into the tournament, the 23-time grand slam winner made a bold statement as her unique outfit took everyone by surprise. However, little did anyone know the reason behind her exceptional choice.

Recently, Serena explained her health concerns which are ongoing and might stick with her for her entire tennis career. “I have had some issues, and they’re not done. So it’s just something I just have to do for pretty much probably the rest of my career, we’ll see. But I’m always at the doctor,” Williams said. “With DVT, it’s very scary,” she continued. “A lot of people have them. Especially for me, it’s incredibly frightening. I lay on the side of precaution as opposed to not.”

Serena Williams, known for her incredible tennis skills, made a bold fashion choice at the 2019 Australian Open. Instead of preferring her usual tennis gear, she wore fishnet compression stockings, which shocked many. People were surprised, but Serena had a good reason for it. She talked openly about her worries regarding blood clots and a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Remembering a scary time during her pregnancy when she almost lost her life, Serena doesn’t take any chances with her health. She puts her well-being before fashion rules, making her style statement on the court. This move was about feeling comfortable and safe while playing, even if it meant breaking away from the typical tennis outfits.

However, reflecting at the time when she gave birth to her daughter, Olympia, she had a near-death experience as there were many complications in it. However, she stood her ground and did not quit while going right to the end.

Serena faced a near-death experience while delivering her first child

Williams, in an interview, shared the terrifying hospital stay she did following the birth of her daughter Olympia in 2017. This was a stay that left her dangerously near death and had to go through four surgeries, including a C-section. Williams had a hematoma in her abdomen and blood clots in her lungs, according to medical reports from 2010. Although her illness was manageable, she was always at risk for blood clots.

Williams started to lose feeling in her legs after giving birth. And her agony got worse. She was forced to do tests to discover if blood clots had formed while she was off her regular medicine, even though the hospital personnel didn’t seem too concerned.

Thus, Serena Williams had to go through a lot during her pregnancy. It left a great mark on her and she had to go through regular doctor visits now and then. Her dress at the Australian Open was just a symbolization of the same.
