Will Naomi Osaka's ex-coach be the game-changer Coco Gauff needs?

It’s not the summer that I want” – Coco Gauff’s first reaction after she failed to defend her title at the US Open. If we take a look at her performance in the last few tournaments, she lost the SF of the French Open and Grass Court Championships in Berlin. After that, she failed to reach the QF in her next five tournaments. Even in the Paris Olympics, she couldn’t bring home a medal for her nation. We have seen her getting disappointed with her performance multiple times in these tournaments. So a change was imminent! Recently, Coco Gauff parted ways with Brad Gilbert after 14 months. Who’ll be her next coach now? Naomi Osaka’s ex-coach has now raised his hand!

Brad Gilbert joined Gauff’s team in August 2023 and he played a pivotal role in her first major title triumph at the 2023 US Open. So, Coco Gauff thanked her former coach, saying, “We had an incredible run and I wish you all the best in the future!” on X. Even Gilbert penned down a heartfelt note for the 20-year-old superstar. He wrote, “Thanks to @CocoGauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort.” Gilbert said Gauff has a bright future and also wished her “continued success” in her journey.

Now, ever since this announcement, the curiosity has gone on to a different level. Everyone wants to know who’d be the next coach of Coco Gauff. Amid all the speculations, Naomi Osaka’s former coach Sascha Bajin’s recent comment on an IG post has sparked new speculations. In that post, the 39-year-old German coach admitted, “I’m ready. They just need to call.” Bajin comes up with a vast experience in the coaching field. He has coached Naomi Osaka from 2017 to 2019.

During his tenure, Naomi Osaka won the 2018 US Open and 2019 AO title, and as a result of such incredible achievements, Bajin won the WTA Coach of the Year in 2018. So, his journey with the Japanese star was like a feather in the cap! Although their journey didn’t end the way they had wanted with Osaka claiming “her trust had been broken“, Bajin later on worked with multiple other WTA stars. And that list includes the likes of Kristina Mladenovic, Dayana Yastremska, Karolína Plíšková, and a few more. Although Bajin recently expressed his wish to join Gauff’s team, there was a time when he brushed off this opportunity.

“She’s in great hands” – Sascha Bajin’s previous reaction when fans asked him to team up with Coco Gauff

Last year, the former hitting partner of Serena Williams, Sascha Bajin, completely dismissed the idea of joining Coco Gauff’s coaching team. He stated that he feels that the young American tennis player already has a great team. When a fan asked him to give a reaction on the chances of him joining Coco Gauff, his reaction was, “She has a great team on the side with Pere Riba and Serena’s former hitter. She’s in great hands.
