A pumped-up Osaka shared an Instagram story of the loud cheers with which the former World no.1 was welcomed to the Centre Court. Williams played her opening round match of the Canadian Master on 8th August. She locked horns with the Spanish tennis ace Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and outclassed her in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4.
Speaking of Osaka, she is yet to play her first round. The four times Grand Slam champion will soon lock horns with the Estonian professional and former world no.15 Kaia Kanepi on the hard courts of Toronto. This will be their second encounter and Osaka will look forward to settling the score and avenging the 2017 US open defeat.

Osaka against Williams
The Japanese have squared off with the 40-year-old four times out of which she has a lead of 3-1. She first met Williams on the hard courts of the Miami Open. There Osaka got the better of the legend in straight sets of 6-3, 6-2.

Further, the only time Williams managed to out-muscle Osaka was in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Toronto Open. Following that, they clashed one more time in the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2021 and Osaka later claimed the title by defeating Jennifer Brady.
