Ask Naomi Osaka, who became the first tennis player from her country to win a Grand Slam singles title. It was the year 2018 when she achieved this monumental feat, defeating Serena Williams in the final of the US Open that year to win her maiden Grand Slam title.

Further, over her career, the Japanese star has gone on to win four major titles, including a couple of Australian Open and US Open titles. Recently, she talked about how she set up goals to succeed in her tennis career.

Naomi Osaka dreamt of winning a Grand Slam title

The 24-year-old shared a motivational video on her official Instagram handle, saying, “When I was younger, I guess like two years ago or something, I felt like my goal was to make history to like somehow at least have one thing that I was able to do right. So I would say, I wanted to be the first Japanese person to win a slam. I think that was my goal and then there was more things to do.”

Further, talking about her career choice, she said, “If I wasn’t playing tennis, I would try to be like a marine biologist, maybe, but I heard that you have to be really good at math so maybe that’s not really. Maybe I would try to be like a physio or something because you get to be around. I just like sports so maybe like an agent in the end.”

Naomi withdraws from the Italian Open

The Japanese tennis star suffered a fresh injury setback after her disappointing Madrid Open campaign. She lost in the second round of the tournament in Spain against Sara Sorribes Tormo. Subsequently, she suffered an Achilles injury that forced her to miss the Italian Open.

Naomi will hope the injury isn’t serious and will look to get back fit in time for Roland Garros. The clay-court Grand Slam tournament commences on 22nd May.
