Aryna Sabalenka enjoyed a phenomenal run in 2024, claiming multiple titles and the World No.1 ranking. Although she couldn’t extend her winning momentum at the WTA Finals, the Belarusian can still look at this season and pat herself on the back. She succeeded in clinching two Majors this year while dominating her opponents, thanks to an impressive fitness and her overall physical build. However, this massive improvement is a result of years of hard work. In fact, she really had to defy her genes in order to have the best “tennis muscles“!
Talking to former ATP pro Andy Roddick on an episode of the Served podcast, dated November 12th, Aryna revealed various details on how she succeeded in becoming a better version of her previous self on the court. Roddick praised her huge change in movement compared to how she used to be three-four years ago. While commenting on a sharp contrast between Sabalenka’s body fitness before and now, he asked her about the main changes she brought into her routine in order to attain the right build. Sharing her response, Aryna mentioned that initially body weight was initially not balanced at all. The main reason for that was her genes. As a result, she was gaining weight frequently. With her fitness coach Jason Stacy, she then tried “to figure out what’s going to work better for me. We were trying to work with the weight. But my genetics is so good, thanks to my parents, because I gained weight so quickly,” she said in a hilarious tone.

The impact of genetics was significant as she was putting on weight without doing heavy workouts. “For two weeks, we were doing some weights and not heaviest weights. And after two weeks, I was plus five kilos,” she said. But Jason kept on helping her in accomplishing the objective of getting the appropriate body fitness. In the beginning, they tried a lot of programs in order to maintain the weight but nothing really worked. “It was like a long process on, first of all, building the right muscles, because when I first got to Jason, I didn’t have, my back was weak, my glutes was weak, my hamstring, like I was weak, you know, I didn’t have enough of like tennis muscles, like the muscle cell, I’ll need on court,” she said.
For the last two-three, she kept on making the muscles stronger. “And then, yeah, I think in the past two, three years, we figured our way of practicing that body weight, a lot of mobility, a lot of active mobility,” said Sabalenka.
