Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, has become a parenting icon for many. From whipping up pancakes for his daughter Olympia to championing paid paternity leave, the Reddit co-founder has impressed fans with his kindness and dedication to his family. Now, Rainn Wilson, known for his role in ‘The Office,’ chimes in with some parenting wisdom for the successful entrepreneur, inspired by Ohanian’s sweet bond with Olympia.

In a recent Business Dad’s episode, “Why You Should Play Dungeons and Dragons with Your Kids with Rainn Wilson”, Alexis Ohanian delved deeper into his parenthood and its struggles. While the father of two spoke about his parenting methods for Olympia’s upbringing, the host Wilson brought him a great suggestion, which he agreed was one of the best possible methods to teach Olympia about the hurdles of life. “And what would it be like for Serena to take Olympia and show her a match, match and say, here’s what I was trying to do in here, I lost and here’s how I felt, and I was depressed for three weeks”- asked Wilson.

In his response, Ohanian found it a great idea. Seeing only achievements, Alexis argued, ignores the struggles behind them. On the contrary, he believes, hearing about failures, especially from successful people, is valuable for anyone, but especially parents. “That would be an incredible thing. Because you see, to your point, right, you see the trophy chest, and you don’t see all of the small failures, the big failures, the struggles, especially someone like her it’s invaluable to hear from but any parent. Yeah, I love this idea of even just saying like, Hey, here’s this thing I really wanted for and I really worked for, and it didn’t work and, and that’s okay, because it’s a chance to learn it’s a chance to grow from that it sucks, but it will make me better”- replied the Reddit co-founder.

Serena herself once revealed how her little Olympia taught her a great life lesson. Back in 2018, this former Olympic gold-medalist WTA star wrote on Facebook- “Today I say Olympia fall… but she got back up. She fell again almost immediately…. and almost immediately she got back up again. She always had a smile on her face. I learned a lot from Olympia today. Thank you my baby love.” From Serena’s statement, it was easier for fans to understand that little Olympia’s dedication to get back after falling helped the former WTA star to deal with her failures. It’s Olympia’s turn to explore her mother’s vulnerabilities and understand how they contribute to who her mom is.

Alexis Ohanian gets candid with Rainn Wilson about paternity leaves

While accepting Wilson’s suggestions about Olympia’s upbringing, Ohanian surprised the audience with his take on paternity leave. Breaking gender stereotypes, Ohanian once again showed that his love for Olympia and Serena needs no boundaries. However, he also raised the question of how other men in the United States are not as lucky as he was.

Alexis’ own experience, however, proved fortunate. During his time at Reddit, the company offered a paternity leave plan, allowing him to fully support his partner in the newborn’s early days. He acknowledged the societal pressure on men to be the sole breadwinner, where a new child translates to a greater financial burden. This, coupled with the fear of disapproval from superiors, often deters men from taking paternity leave.

Nevertheless, his reaction to Rainn Wilson’s parenting suggestion proves that he is a father who wants his daughter to show both the good and the bad sides. It is great learning for Ohanian fans to see how this successful businessman is not afraid to show his and his famous wife’s weaknesses to their daughter. Following such parenting, we hope Olympia grows up as one of the strongest and most open-minded women in the future.
