Serena Williams gave it all during her comeback match at the Wimbledon Championships 2022. Yesterday, she lost out to France’s Harmony Tan in a thrilling first-round encounter to bow out of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.

It was the American legend’s first singles match after exactly a year. Over the past year, the former World Number 1 had been troubled by injuries that kept her away from the tennis court. Nonetheless, it didn’t look like she was away from the sport as she produced a gritty display before bowing out of the tournament. Following her defeat, the 40-year-old opened up about her desire to play at home.

During the post-match interview after her first-round loss, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was asked about her participation in the US Open later this year. She said, “There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.”

Further, talking about her performance against Harmony Tan, Serena said, “I think physically I did pretty good. I think the last couple points, I was really suffering there, but I feel like in just those key points, winning some of those points, is always something mentally that you have to have, that you kind of need. I did pretty good on maybe one or two of them, but obviously not enough.”

Serena’s heartbreaking loss

It was a case of ‘so near, yet so far’ for the former World Number 1 on her comeback match. Serena didn’t have an ideal start to the match as she lost her opening service game. However, she came back strongly to break Tan’s serve in the fourth game of the opening set. At 5-5, Serena lost her serve, which proved to be a turning point as she lost the set 7-5.

Serena turned the tide in her favor in the second set. She was dominant right from the start as she leveled the match by winning the second set, 6-1. Further, the third set was a keenly contested battle, proceeding into the super tiebreaker. Tan eventually won some crucial points in the super tiebreaker, winning the set 7-6 (10-7) to advance to the next round. In the second round, she’ll face Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.
