Billie Jean King is regarded as one of the greatest players the sport of tennis has ever witnessed. The American graced the sport during the 60s and the 70s, before finally retiring in 1990. In a career spanning close to 3 decades, Billie Jean won 39 Grand Slam titles in total, of which, 12 were in singles, 16 in women’s doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles.

On Sunday, Billie Jean King was the guest of honor for flipping the coin at NFL Super Bowl 2022. She tossed the coin in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX. The 78-year-old received immense love from the crowd. However, it was her fellow players who took special mention.

The former World No. 1 received utmost gratitude as fellow players took to their social media, showing supreme excitement for Billie. 

Billie receives gestures of love from fellow players

Former World No.1 Monica Seles took to her Twitter, talking about the coin toss. She said, “Super Bowl LVI Coin Toss will honor the 50th Anniversary of Title IX and Inclusion Across Sports, and who better than our very own Billie Jean King to be the Honorary Coin Toss Captain for today’s Super Bowl.”

Next in line was another former World No. 1 Chris Evert. She appreciated Billie for her coin toss, calling it an honor.

Former doubles World No.1 Rennae Stubbs didn’t stay back as she post the TV clip of the coin toss. 

3-time Mixed Doubles Champion Zina Garrison, in her tweet, referred to Billie Jean King as the God Mother of Sports. 

In the list of greats, the next to wish was another former World No, 1 Kim Clijsters. She took to her Twitter saying, “Let’s go Billie!!”

Billie Jean King and her fight for gender equality in the sport

Billie Jean was a torchbearer for gender equality in sports. In 1972, Billie stood up for the rights of women, being an integral part of the passing of Title IX. It was a provision that prohibits sex discrimination in all federally funded school programs, including sports.

Apart from Title IX, the former World No. 1 also menaced boycotting the US 1973 US Open if the pay inequality wasn’t addressed. Being an influential name in the sport, her demands were met and US Open became the first tournament to award equal prize money for men and women.
