‘Slam Queen’ Serena Williams has opened up on her experience of the pandemic, saying it was an excuse to cut travelling and catch up on some family time.

Speaking at a web summit, the 23-time Grand Slam champion said she could barely afford to spend time at home before the pandemic set in.

Mindful of the busy WTA calendar and the amount of traveling involved, Serena said she always keeps a suitcase at the ready, with some clothes and ‘tennis things’ thrown in.
“I have a suitcase that I always keep with clothes, with tennis things, and I always have the suitcase ready,” Serena shared.

Not shying away from taking her family to work, Serena is often spotted at tournaments with her daughter in tow. The pandemic gave Serena a reason to break away from tennis for a spell and shower some motherly attention on her daughter.

Touching on the pandemic which has literally forced millions across the world to stay indoors, Serena said, “It is the first time that everyone is experiencing the same problem at the same time”.

Happy that it allowed her to spend “a lot of time at home,” Serena said, “These are moments that I will not recover.” The 39-year-old finished the 2020 WTA season ranked outside the Top-10, a rarity in her career.
The season did not go as planned as the pandemic forced event cancellations in the interest of player safety. Serena also lost out on a chance to add to her 23 Major titles at the US Open. The American went out in the semifinal to Belarussian rival Victoria Azarenka.

While there’s a lot of chatter around her future in the game, Serena, according to her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, is more determined than ever to add to her titles in the new season.
