“Where is Serena?”, “Where are you, Venus?” – Despite Maria Sharapova’s desire to recreate their iconic tableau from 2021, she failed to “get the Williams sisters together this year”. At the 2021 Met Gala, Maria Sharapova, Serena, and Venus Williams ignited an iconic moment creating memories even beyond the tennis courts. Anyway, this year, amidst the whispers of their reunion of rivals turned fashion icons, fate seemed to play its hand.

The 37-year-old former tennis player recently took to her Instagram account to share an update for the tennis fans out there regarding how she was able to get both the William sisters separately but not together in a single frame. In the first story, she was seen enjoying a moment with the seven-time Grand Slam champion as both of them were searching for the younger Williams sibling. In the video, Sharapova said, “We are back at the met. Where is Serena? Where are you? We’ll find you.”

Along with that, she also mentioned in the comment, that she was looking out for the 42-year-old American tennis legend. “@serenawilliams where are you, @venuswilliams?” Subsequently, in the following story, she was able to find the 23-time Grand Slam champion, but then she lost the elder Williams sister. Similarly, she said, “Hey Venus, I found her there she is. Where are you? Where are you, Venus?”

However, in the end, she clearly mentioned how she is not able to get both of them together with her, and wrote, “I can’t get the Williams sisters together this year.” The rivalry between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova began in 2004, and it all started at Wimbledon, with the Russian ace shocking everyone by defeating Serena, causing a seismic upset.

Moreover, this victory would mark the start of a one-sided dominance, as Serena went on to claim victory in their next 19 encounters. It is noteworthy since a few years prior, 37-year-old Maria Sharapova, a former tennis player, publicly said that she and the Williams sisters were “not friends” in her 2017 autobiography, “Unstoppable: My Life So Far.”

Subsequently, while they have always stood against each other, the Met Gala has brought them together over time. In a similar way, the 2021 Met Gala will always be iconic for all the tennis fans out there, as they got to witness the three of them in a single frame. While it was the five-time Grand Slam champion who shared the picture with the Williams sisters, both Venus and Serena talked about the amazing tennis reunion at the 2021 Met Gala.

The story behind the iconic trio picture with Maria Sharapova

The seven-time Grand Slam champion clarified the perceived tension around “the infamous Maria photo” taken at the Met Gala during a fan Q&A session on Instagram a few years back. She stated, “We were so happy to see each other again, we hugged, laughed, remembered anecdotes and told her we missed her on the court. Then we took the photo. The moral of this story is that even though we fought furiously on the court, years later we still respect each other.”
