Amidst this, professional Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari looked to have been overshadowed by her poor performance and was in a clear spot of surrendering. In the ongoing WTA Finals, Sakkari faced Elena Rybakina in her second match – but her lackluster performance drew flack from netizens.
After losing the first set horribly with a scoreline of 6-0, there came a moment where she decided to surrender the game. Seeing her reaction, some fans took to Twitter to share their opinion on the ongoing situation.
Fans lash Maria Sakkari after she feels like quitting her match
In a recent video shared on Twitter, Maria Sakkari seemed ready to quit the match, while her coach gave her some much-needed confidence to get back up and give her best. However, some fans did not seem to like the attitude from Sakkari. One fan took to Twitter to express their disappointment while suggesting that it is sad to see how the mentality of players has become today.

Another fan came in and said that they were not sure about what had happened with Sakkari, but that she had most certainly lost the confidence that she used to have. “Idk what happened to her over the past year but she’s definitely lost her confidence,” wrote the fan.

This fan did not hold any words back as he came in and suggested that she had lost the skill and grit that Sakkari was once known for. “She’s out of her depth. Tragic player,” wrote the fan.

This fan came in and said that Maria Sakkari shouldn’t be in Cancun. If she keeps on suggesting this mentality, then the fan suggested she “Has no business being there”.

Thus, Maria Sakkari had to face a lot of backlash from the fans after she thought of surrendering so soon into the match. This not only made her fans unhappy but they also went ahead to suggest that she is not the same player anymore. However, sparks and flashes of her incredible old grit still showed through in the clash.
Sakkari loses after a hard-fought battle
In a match that lasted 3 sets, it had all the drama and excitement. After going down in the first set, Sakkari made a tremendous comeback in the second set with a scoreline of 7-6. However, in a do-or-die battle, she fell a step short against her opponent.
In the third and final set, it was Rybakina who claimed the victory and made sure to grab her first win of the WTA Finals campaign. The final scoreline of the match ended 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. The Kazakh would now be keeping her chin up and getting herself ready for her third round encounter against Jessica Pegula.
The match between the two was a pure joy to watch. It had all the drama and madness but eventually, it was the Kazakh player who had the final laugh in the encounter.
