A major void will be created in women’s tennis as some of the top stars have announced their retirement this year. While Danielle Collins will hang her racquet after 2024, Spanish star Garbine Muguruza also made a more shattering revelation recently. The 2-time Grand Slam champion has put an end to her career after taking a break from the sport last season. Despite her retirement, the 30-year-old has not given up on tennis entirely.
Although born in Venezuela, Muguruza has now settled in Spain. So it’s a given she would be at the Madrid Open! Albeit in the stands, her Caja Magica appearance has raised wild interest.

The Madrid Open has entered the semifinal stage with Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev coming against each other today. There was some major star power in the stands as two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza, accompanied by her fiancé Arthur Borges, quietly sat with sunglasses on.

Interestingly, Muguruza and Borges were seated ahead of tournament director, Feliciano Lopez and Daniella Hantuchova. Muguruza and Borges looked dapper in blazers as they made quite a starry appearance in Madrid. While Borges opted for black sunglasses, Muguruza was spotted wearing transparent purple ones that complemented her look.

Borges and Muguruza got engaged last year and the Spanish-Venezuelan opted to take a break from the sport to focus on her mental well-being and personal life. It had been more than a year since Muguruza last played before she called an end to her illustrious career earlier this year. The Spanish star made a heartbreaking announcement while revealing her retirement news.
Muguruza’s retirement update
With comeback plans out of sight for the Spanish star, she felt it was the right time for her to call an end to her career. Subsequently, she dropped a sensational update and announced her retirement earlier this year. Muguruza said, “I feel I am ready to retire, to open this new chapter in my life. A new era, a new life.”

However, retirement was looming for Muguruza after she had lost interest in tennis following a lengthy break. She even mentioned, “Tennis has no place in my routine. I still follow my peers, and from time to time I still play, but not intensely, more for fun. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my day, or my routines. I’m really taking a real break and trying to stay away from the courts.”
With marriage plans on the mind, Muguruza will look to enjoy her post-retirement life, away from the competitive world of tennis. However, with her retirement, she has left behind a massive void in Spanish tennis, which will take years to fill in.
