Madison Keys marries her coach—does this strengthen her game or complicate her career?

Following Madison Keys’ hectic tennis season, the focus has shifted to her personal life. Last week, she married her longtime partner, Bjorn Fratangelo, in a star-studded ceremony. Keys, 29, has been playing at the top level for quite some time now. Interestingly, Fratangelo is also the coach of Keys and the duo met at the Chris Evert Tennis Academy in Florida. The bonding grew and the two practiced together regularly. Days after marrying her longtime boyfriend, Keys dropped an adorable post that also featured some of her fellow tennis players like Jessica Pegula.

Keys is one of the senior American players on the tour, having been around for a long time. After tying the knot with Fratangelo, Keys took to her official Instagram handle and dropped some adorable glimpses from her wedding night. Fellow tennis players like Pegula and Sloane Stephens also attended the bash.

In the first slide, Keys shared a picture of her kissing Fratangelo on their special day. Subsequently, it was an all-women picture as the likes of Pegula, Townsend, Jennifer Brady, Laura Robson, and others showed off their glittering outfits with Keys posing in the middle. In another picture, Keys and Fratangelo posed with Stephens and her husband, Jozy Altidore. “Best weekend of my life. I love you,” Stephens wrote as she was wrapped in Fratangelo’s love.

Additionally, fellow tennis stars like Townsend also shared some wonderful glimpses from their friend’s wedding. Townsend took to Instagram to share a clip of her opening the wedding guest basket, on which the initials ‘MB’ were printed. “To go see my girl @madisonkeys become a wife,” Townsend wrote. Subsequently, Jennifer Brady was seen shaking a leg during Keys’ wedding. Her performance left many fans in awe, with one saying, “I’m nominating you for Dancing with the Stars.

Keys and Fratangelo met in 2017 and got engaged in March 2023 after dating for 6 years. While tennis was a common connection between them, love eventually developed as they trained together frequently. Later, Fratangelo became Keys’ coach and played an instrumental role in her rise.

However, one of the most important phases of their relationship was during the Covid-19 pandemic. During an interview, Keys revealed how it brought them closer.

While Keys has no plans of quitting tennis anytime soon, it was in fact her time on the court with Fratangelo that brought them together. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to remain indoors but it got them closer. Keys and Fratangelo began understanding each other well and it grew their relationship by leaps and bounds.

Expressing her love for Fratangelo, Keys once revealed, “Being in quarantine together has really shown us that we don’t have to be doing something in particular to enjoy being together. We laugh together a lot and Bjorn is constantly keeping me on my toes. We feel like a regular couple that lives a normal life, and we really don’t mind the normalcy that we have right now. Whether it’s the morning cup of coffee or even hitting balls together, these things could be taken for granted if it’s something you’ve done continuously for many, many years.”

At 29, Keys is at the peak of her career. With only a few quality years left in her career, Keys would look to give it her all when she returns to the court next season and improve on her current WTA ranking of Number 21 in the world.
