Should Coco Gauff stick with Matt Daly or continue her search for a 'super-coach'?

“I’m happy with my decision,” Coco Gauff said after making a change to her coaching staff. After a string of poor performances, she finally ended her partnership with Brad Gilbert after the US Open. The legendary coach’s void was filled by Matt Daly ahead of the China Open. Despite the sudden change and the short time that they worked together, Gauff and Daly’s partnership started off with a bang as the American sensation won the China Open title. As a result, Andy Roddick has now changed his stance on Daly becoming Gauff’s permanent coach.

After splitting with Gilbert, Gauff decided to add Daly to her team only for the Asian Swing of the WTA Tour. However, in no time, the former World Number 941 enabled Gauff to find her winning touch. After Gauff’s triumph in Beijing, Andy Roddick feels that she should end her search for a permanent coach and should stick with Daly.

During the Served With Andy Roddick Podcast episode released yesterday, Roddick gave an honest opinion on Gauff and Daly’s partnership. He revealed, “No disrespect to Matt Daly, I completely respect his tennis IQ. I love what he’s done. He’s firmly put himself in the conversation for being a full-time thing and maybe not needing a super-coach. Certainly the right start and if she has a really strong finish to the year, I actually don’t know why you would put somebody else there.”

While Gauff remains content with the work Daly has done, she still admitted to looking for a permanent coach. During the China Open, she revealed, “What a coach has to offer, I think it depends on what point in your career you’re at, what you’re looking for. Obviously right now I’m very young, so I’m looking just for someone to help me develop in the long-term process, try to help make my game as complete as I can be. We’re working on a lot of developmental things. He’s great.”

One of the biggest weaknesses of Gauff in recent times has been her serve. And it is one of the first things that she wants to address with Daly.

Coco Gauff: ‘When I serve well, I play pretty well’

One of the major reasons for Gauff’s poor performances this year has been her service games. She has struggled with double faults and breaks of serves, something which her opponents have taken huge advantage of. However, she is looking to repair that part of her game with Daly by her side.

Talking about improving her serves, Gauff said, “There are other parts of my game that I want to work on, too, but the focus right now is the serve. When I serve well, I play pretty well. For me, that’s the basis for my game. Already, the little bit we’ve done has made a drastic improvement to where I was three weeks ago. At this point, there’s not a crazy amount, like going through a technique change or resetting everything. It’s just subtle things that, doing it for a week now, will help me. I’m super excited about a new change and, hopefully, to improve other parts of my game.”

After winning the title in Beijing, Gauff is off to a winning start in Wuhan, winning the round-of-32 match against Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets by 6-1, 6-2. Subsequently, she faces Marta Kostyuk in the pre-quarterfinals. Can Gauff win back-to-back titles? Let us know your views in the comments below.
