Is Sloane Stephens the most underrated fighter in women's tennis today?

When it comes to women’s tennis, Sloane Stephens is a name that’s often written in the ‘underdog’ column. The American star made her name known to the world after she clinched the US Open title back in 2o17. Then, she went on to lift seven WTA titles. However, despite the success, things haven’t always been easy for her. Throughout her career, she has always had to deal with online hatred, but the American has never let it get to her. And additionally, she has never shied away from opening up about her experience dealing with criticism and negative opinions.

In a recent episode of Tennis Insider podcast, Sloane Stephens reflected on the criticism she often encounters. She shared how people would make assumptions about her performance on the court. “Everyone always judges me when they see me playing, like, ‘Oh, you’re not trying hard enough,’” she further added, “Guys, come on, give me a break. It’s so difficult when you’ve been out there for so long and there’s so much outside pressure.”

Despite all the noise from critics, Stephens suggested that she has always lived life on her own terms making decisions that felt right to her. “I feel like I’ve lived my life the way I wanted to live it,” she explained. This mindset has helped her navigate through challenges she encountered throughout her career. And, she never let these comments or even professional setbacks stop her from competing.

Her determination and resilience have been key to her success. Stephens reflected on her attitude during tough times, saying, “I was like, f**k it, I’m here.” This approach allowed her to block out negativity and continue moving forward no matter the circumstances.

In case you didn’t know, this is not the first time when she has opened up about the hate she has received from social media. Sloane Stephens, back in 2021, openly talked about the negative comments that were thrown her way following her third-round loss at the US Open.

Sloane Stephens had a disappointing run at the US Open back in 2021. The American suffered a hard-fought third-round elimination at the event.  Following the match, she suggested that she had been suffering a lot of battles and she would not stop fighting.

Post match, Stephens revealed there were around 2000 hate messages on her social media. “This type of hate is so exhausting and never ending,” she wrote. “This isn’t talked about enough, but it really freaking sucks…” she further added while addressing the hatred that professional athletes and celebrities often get. Though the star visibly felt bad, she also made it clear that people heard it loud and clear that it wasn’t going to make her stop.

“Been fighting battles all year and haven’t backed down yet. Never stop fighting! You win or you learn, but you never lose ❤️,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
