In doing so, the Hall of Famer recently came across a remarkable ‘TV record’ that has now been broken by the thrilling match between the Matildas and the Lionesses. Taking note of the ‘FIFA women’s fixture record’, the 79-year-old tennis icon recently expressed her delight on social media.

On her online platforms, the 12-time singles Grand Slam champion is constantly sharing glimpses of her recent trip to the FIFA World Cup taking place in Sydney. The American tennis legend was also there among a flurry of spectators as she witnessed the epic soccer clash between England and Australia’s national team.

After three brilliant goal contributions from Ella Toone (36′), Lauren Hemp (71′), and Alessia Russo (86′), the Lionesses booked a place in the championship match of the prestigious tournament. With six FIFA Women’s World Player awards, the Brazilian soccer star, Marta Vieira da Silva, recently bid adieu to the prestigious tournament. The 37-year-old player’s country faced an early knockout from the group stage in Sydney.

Prior to the World Cup, the Orlando Pride star announced that her sixth participation in the tournament will also mark her farewell campaign for the Brazilian national side. Notably, Jean King penned a heartfelt tribute for the NWSL player on her Twitter account while she also hailed Marta as an “icon”, in both men’s and women’s soccer.
