All is not well for German player Eva Lys. After her impressive performance at the Jasmin Open, the WTA star’s fate took a complete turn, ending her dream unfulfilled. After Lys shared the news with her followers, providing an update about her feelings, her situation raised concerns among the fraternity. While the German player didn’t mention anything serious, her decision highlights the importance of maintaining players’ physical health.
Lys encountered an unfortunate incident during her WTA Guadalajara participation. She began her run at the tournament well and reached the semifinals against Sonay Kartal. Lys had an average 2024 season, except for her Hungarian Open participation where she lost in the semifinals to Diana Shnaider. After that, the German player brought much hope with her performance in the Jasmin Open. However, not all dreams come true at times!
This WTA star withdrew from the tournament, citing illness as the cause. She announced the news on her Instagram story and wrote, “Semis is the worst timing to retire, but unfortunately I got sick here in Monastir. What a sad way to end my good week here but sometimes life is a pain in the ass. Thank you for the great support, I will make it to a WTA final one day.” She also shared a similar message on X. While Lys’ message revealed her wish to reach a WTA tournament final someday, it also echoed her pain in having to retire from the Jasmin Open after months of hard work to improve her skills

Lys encountered a similar situation at the Korea Open last year. Despite winning the tournament’s first round, she retired midway through the next round due to shoulder pain. After that, the German player criticized the WTA’s decision to frequently change game balls, which often left the players injured.
Lys’ withdrawal helped Kartal to reach the Guadalajara finals. A junior of Raducanu, Kartal could play only for 24 minutes before the German called it quits due to her sickness. While Lys’ decision helped Kartal, she wasn’t very fond of entering a WTA final like that.

Lys’ withdrawal helped Kartal reach her career’s first WTA tournament final in Guadalajara. However, she was not pleased with the way it happened. “Obviously no-one wants to win a match like that, she’s a super nice girl, which makes it even tougher. Obviously I’m happy to be in the final but it’s definitely not the way I would have liked to have won today,” said the Briton.
Eva Lys’ unfortunate retirement from what could have been her career’s first WTA final disappointed the tennis fraternity. Since the Hungarian Open, the fraternity has held a lot of hope for the WTA star’s rise. However, an unexpected incident jeopardized her fate. Nevertheless, people wish Eva Lys a speedy recovery so she can fulfill her dreams in the future. Do you think Lys can make it happen in the next season?
