Last week, the Italian Open ended with much fanfare. Iga Swiatek continued her winning momentum going by lifting her fifth consecutive title. In the process, she overtook Serena Williams’ 27-match unbeaten streak. Further, in the men’s section, Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to win his first title this year.

Recently, the former World Number 3, Pam Shriver, called for improving the women’s section of the Italian Open.

Pam Shriver wants Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, and others to unite for the Italian Open

The former US Open finalist took to Twitter to call for a major rejig of the tournament in Rome. She said, “It’s time to get a former @WTA player syndicate together (MN, CE, BJK, MS, SW, VW, KC,LD…) and buy the women’s Italian Open tournament, put a female tournament director in place and either it stays in Rome with equal prize money or find a new city. @SerenaVentures let’s do this!”

Further, Serena is a four-time champion at the Italian Open. Moreover, it was the only WTA 1000 tournament that she played last season. Serena had a second-round exit at the tournament in 2021, losing against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina.

Roger Federer’s agency in the mix to buy Cincinnati Open

The Swiss maestro’s agency, TEAM8, is in the reckoning to buy the rights for the Cincinnati Masters. Talking about this, the former World Number 1, Andy Roddick, said, “In the world of tennis, where conflict of interests knows no bounds at all, Roger can do this. He’s obviously been a great steward for the game, has created an incredible relationship with the fans in the city of Cincinnati.”

Further, he went on to add, “You would like to see it stay in the tennis family, with someone who actually knows and loves our sport. So we will see, from what I hear, there are a number of interested parties but it is nice to see responsible names in the mix.”

Meanwhile, Federer is looking to make a comeback to tennis after a long injury absence. He has already confirmed his participation at the Laver Cup and the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
