The sporting world is a fast-paced environment. While players make their mark and conclude their long-drawn ambitions with laudable triumphs, an overwhelming addition of new talents sometimes clouds the memories of those old gems. Though Serena Williams can hardly relate to this, a certain arch-rival of hers has been somewhat forgotten by the community. However, Williams’s childhood coach has stepped in to jog everyone’s memory.
Back in the day, Williams had to navigate past several high-level competitors to reach where she is. One of those rivals was Jennifer Capriati. The American star’s compatriot, who turned pro at the age of 14, wasn’t just your regular WTA contestant. She clinched three Grand Slam singles crowns during her illustrious run on the turn. She even defended her Australian Open title in 2022 against Martina Hingis with a dramatic come-from-behind victory, but, her feats were unfortunately short-lived.
The former American No. 1 was marred with a string of wrist and shoulder injuries that sidelined her after the 2004 season. Despite getting multiple surgeries, her comeback attempt could not receive the justice it needed. However, before she retired, Capriati set a noteworthy head-to-head record against Williams. In their overall 17 tour-level clashes, the 48-year-old got the better of the 24-time Major winner a total of seven times, but, fell behind Williams 7-10 in their h2h.

I was also wearing stage makeup because I volunteered to help with the kids’ performance. I am a dark Black woman, and I love who I am and love how I look.”
