Laureus Awards 2024: Is Iga Swiatek Competing in the Same Category as Coco Gauff? Everything to Know About Tennis’ Dominant Representation

The Laureus Awards are akin to the Oscars for the sporting industry. For unversed, every year, a player who has shown the magic of their sport is crowned in various categories. Tennis stars are a major presence in the awards, and this year is no different. Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are two WTA players who are nominated for this year’s event. However, do they battle head to head or alongside?

Swiatek began 2023 with a fourth-round loss in the Australian Open. However, she won the French Open and the China Open and appeared in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships and Madrid Open, along with the semifinal in three Masters. She closed out the year by winning the WTA Finals and regaining her position at the top.

Her efforts speak of a great year, and hence, she has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year 2024. Swiatek was nominated for the same award in 2023 but lost to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. If Swiatek wins the award this year, she will be the 8th tennis woman athlete do so since the inception of Laureus Awards.

Coco Gauff journey in 2023 was a testament to her resilience as a player. She failed to produce results and exited Wimbledon in her opening round clash. However, she turned it around and won her first WTA 500 (Washington Open), 1000 (Cincinnati Masters) and grand slam (US Open). She finally attained her potential and will now contest other nominees for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year 2024. Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was nominated for and won the award in 2023.

While the two stars are highlights for tennis in the 2024 Laureus Awards, they are not the only ones representing the most popular racquet sport.

The 2023 year saw four different slam champions. The Wimbledon final surprised all the viewers as Ons Jabeur looked to win the championship. Unfortunately for the three time slam finalist, Markéta Vondroušová had other plans. She took the victory and trophy 6-4, 6-4, entering the top 10 for the first time in her career. She has been nominated as for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year 2024.

Aside from the three stars, Diede de Groot also found a nomination in the awards. Groot is one of the most accomplished wheelchair tennis players. She has attained three Grand Slams, with 2023 being the third instance. She is nominated for the Laureus Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability 2024, an award for which she has been nominated four times in the past. Now, she is looking to win the award to seal her name as one of the greatest of wheelchair tennis players.
