In Wimbledon 2021, Serena Williams was all set to start her campaign. John McEnroe and Chris Evert were there discussing her chances. Meanwhile, the host asked them how difficult it is to play tennis, and how they dealt with the fame aspect of it.
“I don’t know. John and I got through it. I think John had it tougher than I did. He seemed to have gotten through it unscathed, pretty good shape. Probably should ask him, too,” Evert said.
Replying to that, McEnroe said, “Well, I’m not on social media, number one,” he said. “I feel like I could have got myself in a hell of a lot of trouble had I been back in the day. Maybe even now. But certainly back in the day.”
Although we have seen the different ways modern-day greats, try to keep themselves away from negativity, it is still difficult to hide from them. While there are disadvantages to social media, there are plenty of advantages too. One of them is the ease of expression for celebrities. Evert once condemned abuse targeted at athletes
One of the major disadvantages of social media is the hate that athletes have to face online. It is understandable that at times fans are unhappy with the way their favorite players fare, but online abuse is completely unacceptable. Highlighting the issue, Victoria Azarenka asked if the fans have so much problem with a particular athlete, why don’t they simply unfollow them and move on in their lives?

Evert backed her up by sharing her tweet and also asked the same question. Recently, we have seen that such online hate and trolls severely impact the mental health of athletes. While social media acts as a bridge between athletes and fans, such unnecessary hate targeted toward athletes should be avoided.
