During the semi-final match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova at the US Open, an unexpected interruption occurred after the first game of the second set. Three people in the upper deck stood up and started shouting in protest. These individuals were part of a group against fossil fuels and wanted to make their voices heard.

While most of the crowd was there to watch the tennis match, one person in a grey outfit remained seated and refused to leave. As the disruption continued, people in the audience started chanting, “kick them out,” creating a temporary distraction from the game.

This incident highlighted how sometimes, even in the midst of a sporting event, important issues like environmental activism can come to the forefront, sparking discussions and debates beyond the tennis court.

However, it is not the first time that anything like this happened in the history of the sport. There have been multiple instances when the game has been suspended due to such activities.

During Wimbledon this year, a similar incident occurred. While Grigor Dimitrov was trying to serve in his match, an activist jumped right on court 18 and spread the orange graffiti on the court which eventually halted the match. The protesters were environmental activists who wore t-shirts with “just stop oil” written on them.

However, the activists were latest arrested on the charges of trespassing and doing damage to the property. Back in 2010, the same incident happened yet again as a set of environmentalists interrupted John Isner‘s match at the same place.

Thus, these events highlight the need for proper security checks before allowing anyone to enter in the stadium. Not only this, the fans should maintain dignity in the sports arena while making sure that the fans and players enjoy the best of their game.
