Ranked number 131, Volynets had an outstanding start to the Indian Wells 2024 by defeating her opponent Mirra Andreeva in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open. After the victory, Volynets shared her high school stories and how they shaped her journey to becoming a professional tennis player.

When COVID struck, Katie Volynets was still at the tail end of her life as a student. Instead of attending college, she decided to turn professional. In various interviews, Volynets has openly talked about how she values the experience that she gains on the court of tennis but at the same time, the 22-year-old has always shown her appreciation for her school and her parents for supporting and pushing her to achieve her dreams. “I’m honestly really happy that my parents kept me in public school, and my councilors in high school were so nice to me.”
“They let me travel for ITFs when I needed to, given that I would complete tests on time and things like that when I come back,” Volynets said in her latest post-match interview at Indian Wells.
Volynets further explained that was one of the most significant lessons that she learned during her school days, which enabled her to juggle her academics with playing tennis. “This really gave me an edge, I think, on multitasking and time management because I really had to make sure that I have everything done so that my school work didn’t invade my brain during the tennis matches,” Katie Volynets added.

The first time that Volynets held a racquet
Katie Volynets’ integration into tennis started when she was only 5 years old. After receiving a tennis racquet as a gift from her family, she would watch her brother play tennis with their parents, which eventually led her to take an interest in the sport. Volynets previously revealed, “One day I got really bored with my coloring books. So then I was, like, ‘Dad, can I borrow your racquet? Can I try?”
