Martina Navratilova has never been one to shy away from difficult conversations. The 18-time Grand Slam champion has long used her platform to advocate for fairness in sport, especially when it comes to gender and competition. Over the years, she’s highlighted how qualities like competitiveness and muscularity are often praised in male athletes, while the same traits in women are criticized. In one instance, she used Rafael Nadal as an example to challenge stereotypes about female tennis players. Her stance has become especially prominent in recent years amid growing debates around transgender athletes in women’s sports. What has she said now?

Navratilova, who is openly lesbian, has taken a firm position on the matter. She believes that labeling trans women as women ignores basic biology, stating, “Biology 101” in her argument. While her comments have been controversial, she has continued to speak her mind despite criticism from within the LGBT community. In February, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Keep Men Out of Women’s Sports,” effectively banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. Although she disagrees with Trump on most issues, Navratilova supported this decision. “I disagree with Trump on everything but this issue,” she told The Daily T. Her support for the order led to further backlash, with some members of the LGBT community labeling her a Nazi and a homophobe. But even with those harsh words aimed at her, Navratilova has not backed down.

Following the U.S. development, the United Kingdom also made headlines with a recent ruling by its Supreme Court. The court decided that, under the country’s equality law, a woman is defined by “biological sex,” a move that excludes transgender women from the legal definition of female. This sparked debate in political spaces as well, including a discussion in Westminster Hall during Lesbian Visibility Week. Labour MP Kate Osborne shared a personal account during the debate, emphasizing how the decision could impact both her life and the lives of others. “I am misgendered frequently,” she said.“This decision will have a huge impact on my life and many other cis lesbians and indeed heterosexual women. I suspect I will get challenged even more now when accessing facilities, and whilst the impact on my life will be problematic, the impact on my trans siblings’ lives is going to be significantly worse.”

The clip of Osborne’s speech soon found its way to social media, where opinions varied. One user on X commented, “This doesn’t make the point she thinks. Maybe if ppl weren’t so scared of trans fascists they’d refer to people by their sex, but dipsh–s like Kate here keep telling us we should judge by clothes, hair & pronouns. It’s tragically sexist & regressive.”

That post drew the attention of Navratilova, who didn’t hold back in her response. “Kate is full of it. Anyone whose eyes are open can see Kate is a female, end of,” she wrote.

The 68-year-old also expressed support for a female fencer who recently made headlines in the United States.

Martina Navratilova lends her voice to female fencer

Stephanie Turner, a 31-year-old athlete, was disqualified from a fencing tournament in Maryland after she refused to compete against Redmond Sullivan, a transgender opponent. During their scheduled match, Turner knelt in protest. Officials responded by issuing her a black card, disqualifying her from the competition.

Sullivan had previously competed in the men’s division but was permitted by USA Fencing to participate in the women’s tournament. The video of Turner’s protest quickly went viral on X, igniting further debate. Martina Navratilova reacted strongly to the incident, writing: “This is what happens when female athletes protest! Anyone here still thinks this is fair??? I am fuming… and shame on @USAFencing, shame on you for doing this. How dare you throw women under the gender bullsh*t bus!!!”
